Weekend Review: Black Sails, Mitt and Lizzie Borden

It's quite a week for those who enjoy rugged armchair escapism of the historical epic variety. First came the three nights of Discovery's enjoyable gold-rush melodrama Klondike (repeated in its entirety on Saturday, starting at 9:30 am/8:30c), during which Jack London (played by Johnny Simmons) is heard rhapsodizing, "What you're looking at here is a walking, talking novel," as he surveys the squalor and violent desperation teeming throughout Dawson City, the miniseries' Yukon frontier setting.

Christina Ricci Takes a Whack at Lizzie Borden for Lifetime

Was legendary ax murderer Lizzie Borden nothing more than a cold-blooded killer? That's the basis for Lifetime's latest film, which stars Christina Ricci as the titular woman standing trial for the murder of her parents.

While there are countless theories about Borden's crimes  — including that her father Andrew Borden's illegitimate son committed the murders or Lizzie committed them during an epileptic fit brought on by menstruation — Lizzie Borden Took an Ax seems happier sticking to the general consensus that Lizzie did the deed.
