Lost in all this week's understandable hubbub over NBC putting Community on midseason hiatus — and no, I'm not happy about it, either — was the welcome news that NBC is at least doing the right thing by its freshman sleeper comedy Up All Night and moving it to Thursdays come January, swapping time periods with Whitney. (What took them so long?) On this week's new episode (8/7c), yet another Saturday Night Live alum makes a guest appearance:
Yes, Maya Rudolph is the one who usually gets most of the big laughs on Up All Night. And why not? She's a hoot as self-absorbed talk-show host Ava and there's very little she can't do with a song and an inappropriate line of dialogue. But attention must be paid to the sitcom's leading lady and this week's TV Guide Magazine cover girl Christina Applegate.
Now it's not like last night's episode stood out as a special showcase for her. In fact, it was more about Rudolph and guest star Jason Lee than anything. Yet even with...
With its worn-in leather sofa and duct-taped-together flat screen, the loft set of Fox's New Girl exudes the vibe of lazy afternoons and beer-fueled late nights. A few feet away, Zooey Deschanel is cutting loose during a photo shoot. There's some emphatic twirling in a retro-chic, peony-pink party dress and some even more emphatic lip-synching into a toy microphone to a David Bowie track — all while rocking a rhinestone tiara.

It's time to get schooled.
In this week's Up All Night, Chris (Will Arnett) and Reagan (Christina Applegate) take baby Amy to a play group, though it's not a playful group. Chris and Reagan are the "aggressive" new parents when it comes to...

Eesh. Are we supposed to like these people?
Last night, NBC did itself no favors by premiering Free Agents right after its much-more likable effort, Up All Night. Talk about suffering by comparison...
H8R, Up All Night, Free Agents
Wednesday night brought three new shows to the fall lineup for you to love or hate ... or is it <3 or H8?
Host Mario Lopez kicked off the night with The CW's H8R, a show that allows celebrities to confront those who despise them most with the hopes of changing their minds. In the premiere, Jersey Shore's Snooki cooked an Italian dinner for one of her haters, while The Bachelor's Jake Pavelka attempted to sway one blonde to become a fan.
In this year's mixed bag of a new fall season, I tend to find myself touting several of the comedies more frequently than almost any of the dramas, which is rarely the case. There are plenty of sitcom stinkers this fall — one of tonight's, actually, is at the very bottom of my must-flee (as opposed to must-see) list. But with New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, Suburgatory and (tonight's pick) Up All Night, there's reason to believe that network comedy's renaissance — reflected in the fact that all six of this year's best-comedy Emmy nominees are network shows — may be here ...
