The Biz: Christiane Amanpour Goes Back to the Beginning

The sight of Christiane Amanpour reporting from conflict zones in the Middle East is one of the most familiar images in television news. So it will be a real change of pace for viewers when she's seen as a relaxed traveler — and mother — in Back to the Beginning, a two-part special airing Dec. 21 and 28 (9/8c, ABC). Amanpour and her son Darius hit the road earlier this year to explore the ancient sites depicted in "the oldest stories ever told," as she puts it. They take an archeological tour through Turkey and the Middle East to examine the sites of biblical tales that unite rather than divide the followers of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Amanpour talked to The Biz about the special and her new boss at CNN, Jeff Zucker.

Shattered by the Republican victory, Clinton begins to sideline his most trusted advisors in favor of an aggressive political consultant named Dick Morris who uses extensive polling to diagnose the administration’s weaknesses and develop strategies to correct them. The Republican “Contract with America” is riding high and by spring 1995, Gingrich and his allies select the ground on which to wage their war: a plan to eliminate the federal budget deficit by drastically cutting Medicare and Medicaid. The plan leads to a government shutdown and slowly the tide begins to turn toward the President, who reclaims the political center with a stream of new initiatives that will curb big government and appeal to middle class families. Clinton wins the 1996 election in a landslide, pulling off one of the greatest turnarounds in political history. But events have been set in motion that will soon divide the country and nearly destroy Clinton's presidency. watch

TV News Relies on Cell Phones, Twitter to Evade Iranian Censorship

TV Networks covering the Iranian protests are smuggling news out of the country with cell phones, amateur video, and social networks — the same tools used by protestors still packing the country's streets.

"If this happened 10 years ago you wouldn't have the video phones, or even five years ago you wouldn't have sites like Twitter, or YouTube wouldn't be as ubiquitous," Jim Sciutto, ABC News' senior foreign correspondent, told TVGuide.com. "That's frustrating for these kinds of governments because they would love to be able, and I think they're used to, being able to shut this kind of thing down." read more
