TV News Relies on Cell Phones, Twitter to Evade Iranian Censorship

TV Networks covering the Iranian protests are smuggling news out of the country with cell phones, amateur video, and social networks — the same tools used by protestors still packing the country's streets.

"If this happened 10 years ago you wouldn't have the video phones, or even five years ago you wouldn't have sites like Twitter, or YouTube wouldn't be as ubiquitous," Jim Sciutto, ABC News' senior foreign correspondent, told TVGuide.com. "That's frustrating for these kinds of governments because they would love to be able, and I think they're used to, being able to shut this kind of thing down."read more

Christiane Amanpour Reports on CNN's New Doc Series

CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour has been reporting from overseas hot spots since 1989, so she knows firsthand about God's Warriors, the subject of her three-part documentary series airing Aug. 21 to 23 at 9 pm/ET. Over six hours, Amanpour dissects the recent history of the fundamentalist elements of three Abrahamic faiths — Judaism, Christianity and Islam — and how they want to transform society to fit their beliefs. The Biz recently talked with Amanpour about her willingness to dig deep into serious issues and go against the tabloid tide that's been pulling at cable news.TVGuide.com: Cable news has changed a lot over the last 15 years, but you're still able to go out and do serious long-form pieces. Who drives that? Do you have to push to get them done? When we think of cable news, we're not thinking about this kind of material anymore.Christiane Amanpour: I agree that it has changed an awful lot since Ted Turner created it. I think there is some... read more

May 15, 2007: The Goodbye Girls

It’s really over. As hard as it is to write those words, I actually feel like I am able to let go. I had a lot of help, actually. It took a village. Every single person in the wonderfully quirky Stars Hollow made it easier to say goodbye to Rory as she left her tiny town for wide-open America. And it was bittersweet.Who else but Luke would gather everyone to plan a huge last-minute surprise party for Rory in the town square? And when the forecast (aka Babette’s swollen ankles) called for rain, he collected tarps and raincoats to sew together a tent. Sure enough, it was pouring on celebration day when Lorelai and Rory pulled up in their Jeep as all of Stars Hollow huddled beneath that tent. I loved that panning shot of the happy faces that we’ve gotten to know over the past seven years: Zack, Liz, Kirk, Lane, Michel, Lulu, Brian, Gypsy, Miss Patty, Babette, Morey, Taylor, Jackson, Sookie and a wide-grinning Luke all clapping and cheering for Rory. “I can’t be... read more

Gilmore Exclusive: Rory Finally Meets Her Idol!

Say what you want about this season's Gilmore Girls, but show-runner Dave Rosenthal has succeeded in at least one area where Team Palladino failed: He's arranged for Rory to finally come face-to-face with her longtime idol, Christiane Amanpour!According to multiple Girls sources, CNN's internationally renowned newshound will make a cameo in the show's May 8 season (and likely series) finale. Amanpour's scene is still being written, so all that's known at this point is that she will be playing herself. As anyone with a passing interest in Gilmore Girls knows, Amy and Dan were relentless in their bid to lure Amanpour to Stars Hollow during their six-year reign. They almost succeeded in getting her late last season, but a scheduling conflict derailed things at the 11th hour. They left shortly afterwards and, well, the rest is history. Whatever mixed feelings they have about the show these days, I gotta think this news will put a smile on their faces. Now, regarding the small matter of ... read more

Christiane Amanpour Looks for Bin Laden

CNN's chief international correspondent, Christiane Amanpour, hosts CNN Presents: In the Footsteps of Bin Laden (premiering tonight at 9 pm/ET), a two-hour profile of Osama bin Laden driven by interviews with those who have crossed paths with him. The globe-trotting journalist sat down with us in July to chat about her experiences filming the documentary. TV Guide: Given his elusiveness, how does one begin to look for and learn about Bin Laden?Christiane Amanpour: Well, looking for him is one thing. You've got pretty much the whole U.S. military trying to find him, and they haven't been successful yet. But we convinced a lot of people who knew him to talk about him, from an English professor who taught the Bin Laden family to his ch read more
