Did The Newsroom Save Its Best Season for Last?

Jeff Daniels, Sam Waterston

Given the anticipatory hype that preceded the 2012 debut of HBO's The Newsroom, it would have been hard to predict that the Aaron Sorkindrama would end the way it is — with a truncated third and final season that begins Sunday.

After two up-and-down years — the first season was met with decidedly harsh reviews, while the second was received more warmly despite some persisting flaws —and a very tidy Season 2 finale, it seemed Sorkin might be ready to just move on to something else. But after negotiating with HBO and bringing The Office's Paul Lieberstein on board, Sorkin & Co. decided they weren't quite finished... read more

Question: I heard that Fox canceled its freshmen sitcoms Dads, Enlisted and Surviving Jack! While I never watched and didn't care for Dads, I did watch (and loved!) both Enlisted and Surviving Jack. What puzzles me about the cancellations of all of these shows were that their ratings performed with the same numbers that Fox's other sitcoms New Girl, The Mindy Project and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, yet those shows all got renewed for another season! Why is it that The Powers That Be at Fox would cancel three shows that had the same low (or modest) ratings as the other three shows that got picked up for another year? It doesn't really make sense with me! - Chris

The Mindy Project Finale: Will Danny Win Mindy Back?

Chris Messina and Mindy Kaling

Danny (Chris Messina) went in for a kiss again on last week's Mindy Project, but our favorite doctor was having none of it. Mindy (Mindy Kaling) shut Danny down — hard — for only wanting her when he couldn't have her. And good for her! Danny was acting like a royal jerk. But thankfully, he'll try and make up for it in Tuesday's Season 2 finale (9:30/8:30c, Fox) when he sets out to win Mindy back.

In homage to You've Got Mail, Danny places a missed connection ad for Mindy in a newspaper (because do you really think Danny's heard of Craigslist?) and begins courting our modern day Shopgirl under the guise of being someone else.

The Mindy Project: In Defense of Mindy and Danny's Breakup

Chris Messina, Mindy Kaling

"Sorry about that."

Mindy Project writer and star Ike Barinholtz says up front, apologizing for his part in Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny's (Chris Messina) shocking breakup last week.

"We got some little abuse on twitter, a little friendly abuse. But you know when that happens I kind of love that," Barinholtz tells TVGuide.com. "It just means that people are not only watching the show but are passionate about the show. And they really get invested in it enough to tweet, 'You bastard, how could you do this?!'"

Mindy, Amy and (on DVD) Laura Petrie: TV's Funny Girls

Chris Messina, Mindy Kaling

Having recently been renewed for a third season, disproving TV's usual out-of-sight/out-of-mind policy, Fox's The Mindy Project emerges from a three-month hiatus with back-to-back episodes (Tuesday, 9/8c) demonstrating Mindy Kaling's devotion to screwball comedy. A concept which Amy Schumer would probably find a way to make sound really, hilariously dirty. (Her uproarious Comedy Central sketch-com Inside Amy Schumer returns at 10:30/9:30c, making this an especially happy April Fools Day.)

The Mindy Project's Kaling and Messina: Mindy and Danny Are "Extremely Happy" Post-Kiss

Mindy Kaling, Chris Messina

After nearly two seasons of repressed feelings and sexual tension, The Mindy Project's midseason finale shocked viewers when Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and Danny (Chris Messina) shared a passionate kiss on a flight en route back to New York.

"I thought that some people might dig it or some people might not dig it ... but I was definitely kind of shocked that people had such a visceral experience with it," Messina tells TVGuide.com.
