Chris Carter: X-Files 2 Is a Stand-alone Film

Apparently, the truth is still out there. Which would explain why The X-Files will be back out there July 25, when the second movie version of the series hits theaters. Plot details are more closely guarded than an alien autopsy, but creator Chris Carter does have a few clues to offer those eager X-Files fans who have been waiting for more since the Fox show ended in 2002. "This is really a continuation of the series, imagining how the characters' lives have evolved," explains Carter, who cowrote and is directing the movie. "It's a stand-alone story that owes everything to the series, but not the mythology of the series. What we'll be dealing with is government-based as far as the conspiracy goes, but expect this not to be a revisitation [of the show's convoluted conspiracy]."FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) will still be at the center of the story, and Studio 60's Amanda Peet and rapper Xzibit have been added to the cast as fellow agents. I know it's a little late, ...

Elizabeth Mitchell, Lost

Question: I know it's a little late, but I'd like to address the Emmy nominations. I think that Elizabeth Mitchell definitely was robbed of a Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nod for Lost. Her work has been top-notch, and Juliet emerged as my favorite character this Lost season. Cheers for Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn on their nominations. They — especially Emerson as the enigmatic and chilling Ben — deserve it. But the person who perhaps deserves an Emmy nomination most of all, and who never gets noticed, is John Terry. Terry is such a fantastic (and underrated) actor, he actually makes you feel empathetic for Jack's father when you know you should be rooting for Jack. Lost definitely should've been nominated as a series, because the writing, directing and acting were excellent this past season (let's just forget about the prehiatus episodes and "Stranger in a Strange Land"). Once again, though, the Emmy nominations were utterly predictable. On another Lost topic, many ... read more

X-Files 2: The Script Is Out There

David Duchovny, in the course of talking up his new Showtime series Californication, also wound up discussing infestation, mutation and alien invasion — that is, the status of the always-looming second X-Files movie. "I'm supposed to see a script next week," the erstwhile Agent Mulder revealed at the TCA summer press tour. "[X-Files creator] Chris [Carter] will direct it. Gillian [Anderson] is on board, and that's all I can tell you."The original film follow-up hit theaters some nine years ago. What say we kill two birds with one stone, merge two TV franchises, and call the movie "X and the City"? read more

Another X-Files Movie?

Mulder and Scully could be reunited back on the big screen sooner than we imagined. David Duchovny dropped a bombshell at the end of a Saturday afternoon TCA session promoting his raunchy new Showtime series Californication (which premieres August 13 alongside the third-season launch of Weeds). Our favorite "spooky" FBI agent says he's expecting to get a script next week for a movie sequel to 1998's The X-Files blockbuster. Chris Carter, who'll also direct, wrote the script with Frank Spotnitz, and Duchovny says Gillian Anderson is also on board for production to start, possibly in the fall. No details beyond that at this point, but it's exciting news for those of us who've long been convinced there's more truth out there to be discovered. read more

Sopranos to the Silver Screen? Experts Share Their Takes

Tony Sirico and James Gandolfini, The Sopranos

After The Sopranos ended — in a flurry of suspicion and onion rings — rumors started flying: Had creator David Chase kept Tony breathing for a Sopranos movie? ("I never say never," Chase told the Newark Star-Ledger. "An idea could pop into my head where I would go, ‘Wow, that would make a great movie,' but I doubt it.") "It could make a good feature," says director Barry Sonnenfeld, who adapted two beloved TV series, The Addams Family ("No one complained," he says), and Wild Wild West ("Which, let's just say, was problematic"). "But the question is, will the studio that makes the mo read more

Night Stalker: The Truth Is Out on DVD

Night Stalker's Stuart Townsend and The X-Files' David Duchovny

Fans of one of the original ghostbusters and his most recent TV incarnation would be wise to scare up a copy of the new Night Stalker DVD boxed set hitting stores today, as it offers up not only four episodes never broadcast during the series' fall 2005 ABC run, but also revealing commentary from creator Frank Spotnitz. TVGuide.com seized this opportunity to ask Spotnitz about his Stalker's unfortunate fate, the frightfully fun show he's working on now and the next X-Files fi read more

When it comes to the long-awaited...

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson

When it comes to the long-awaited second X-Files feature film, the truth is out there — and it ain't good. The latest setback? Franchise creator Chris Carter recently filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox over the show's profits. "Everyone's [movie] deal is done — mine, David Duchovny's and Gillian Anderson's — but Chris' is not," says former X-Files producer Frank Spotnitz, who cooked up the sequel's story with Carter. "And I can't imagine that his deal will get completed until this legal dispute is resolved. My hope is that we can make this movie while people still care." (Carter declined to be interviewed for this story.) The actress formerly known as Scully still cares, but her patience is wearing thin. "It's frustrating because we have no control," says the Emmy winner, who, with the exception of some film work, PBS' recent Bleak House adaptation and a read more
