On a Busy Sunday, Praising Brotherhood

Jason Clarke and Jason Isaacs in Brotherhood by Jim Fiscus/Showtime

This Sunday, it sure didn't feel as if the sweeps month had already ended. Major pivotal episodes of ABC's hit series, a movie special on CBS (one of the better Hallmark Hall of Fames to air in a while) and, somewhat lost in the shuffle, a season finale of one of TV's more underappreciated dramas. That's a lot to digest.First off, the watercooler show of the night was unquestionably Desperate Housewives, capping an above-par season with the long-awaited arrival of a devastating twister. The circumstances were just about as far-fetched as most things that happen in this diverting comedic soap, but that final shot of a flattened Wisteria Lane was truly apocalyptic. Lynnette’s banshee screech would have been justified even if she hadn’t just realized the house where her family had hunkered down in the basement was buried in rubble. Outstanding.(For the record, I side with those who think that Ida, the owner of the wayward cat, is probably the “friend” referred to in... read more

Giving Thanks for TV

The Simpsons courtesy Fox

The past few weeks have been trying ones for anyone who cares about TV and the potentially devastating impact the ongoing writers’ strike could have on the current season and beyond. Which is why, being a cockeyed optimist and all, I’ve been cautiously thanking the fates ever since hearing that the Writers’ Guild and the producers’ alliance are going back to the negotiating table on Monday. No guarantee, of course, that this will mean a quick end to the standoff that has shut so much production down already. But hey, it’s Thanksgiving week, so let’s stay in a thankful and hopeful mode, OK?In that light, here are 10 more reasons to be thankful about the current week in TV as we head into the Thanksgiving break.1. We’re still in a sweeps month, which has allowed us most nights to live blissfully in denial that a strike is even happening, since new episodes continue to abound (including over most of this long holiday weekend). Depending on what happen... read more

New Fletch DVD Extras Include Two Steak Sandwiches and Ball Bearings

Thank god, it's... the DVD. A new Fletch: The Jane Doe Edition DVD slated for release on May 1 boasts a digitally remastered picture and includes the new featurettes "Just Charge It to the Underhills: Making and Remembering Fletch," "From John Cocktoaston to Harry S. Truman: The Disguises," and a compilation of favorite Fletch moments. (I was only kidding about the sandwiches and ball bearings, though it is all ball bearings these days.) I don't usually single out DVD releases in their own news item, but this is one of the funniest, most quotable films of all time, and exceptions will be made. Now does anyone have a towel? My car just hit a.... read more
