The son of two music teachers, he grew up in Rhode Island.
Played baseball and was active in dramatics in college.
After college, appeared on-stage at the Williamstown (Mass.) Theater Festival and in Boston.
Made his TV debut (as "mailroom kid") in the 2000 Mary Tyler Moore-Valerie Harper TV movie Mary and Rhoda.
Was a regular on the short-lived Fox sitcom Luis (2003); had guest roles on Madigan Men, Law & Order and Third Watch.
Is married to Mary Elizabeth Ellis, who plays The Waitress, the object of his character Charlie's unreturned affections on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The couple also played incestuous siblings in a 2004 episode of Reno 911.
Is working with It's Always Sunny costars Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenny on a sci-fi sitcom titled Boldly Going Nowhere.
