  • ABC, NBC and CBS to "Stand Up to Cancer" | Today's News: Our Take | 5/28/2008
The "big three" networks are putting ratings wars aside for at least one day in September when ABC, NBC and CBS will each "Stand Up to Cancer" by airing a fund-raiser to benefit research. Each of the nets will donate one hour of commercial-free, primetime coverage to the telethon simultaneously, says Variety. Each of the networks' evening news anchors — Charles Gibson, Brian Williams and Katie Couric (whose husband died of colon cancer in 1998) — made the rounds on each network's morning shows today to promote the telethon, on which they will all appear as well. The fund-raiser will air Sept. 5 and will feature live performances from music artists as well as appearances from film and TV stars, none of which have been announced at this time. — Adam Bryant read more
  • Charles Gibson Breaks Down the Democratic Race | Today's News: Our Take | 4/16/2008
On the eve of April 22's Pennsylvania primary, Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will clash in a 90-minute Democratic presidential candidate debate from Philadelphia (tonight at 8 pm/ET, ABC). At ringside is Charles Gibson, the ABC World News Tonight anchor who shares moderating duties with George Stephanopoulos. We caught up with Gibson to get his thoughts on the grueling campaign. TV Guide: Explain the significance of Obama vs. Clinton.Charles Gibson: It's self-evident — we have two candidacies that I'd never thought I'd see. It is the first time since 1928 that there hasn't been a president or a vice president on the ticket for one party or the other. It's the first time we've had anything this wide open in my lifetime. • Cheers: ABC's Winning Decision | Cheers & Jeers | 1/9/2008
Cheers to ABC for devoting a half-hour of prime time to coverage of the New Hampshire primary. After the Alphabet scored surprisingly strong ratings Saturday night with the candidates' debates, the 'net happily bumped an episode of Just for Laughs to make room for Charlie Gibson and Co. CBS and NBC, on the other hand, stuck with the People's Choice Awards and The Biggest Loser. ABC offered its own versions, with John McCain as the People's Choice and Mitt Romney as the Biggest Loser on the Republican side, and the Democrats too close to call. Of course, ABC's civic good deed probably wouldn't have happened if not for the writers' strike, but at least something positive has come out of that stalemate.• Read and react to Bruce's opinions on Jon Stewart, Desperate Housewives and more!• Share your own raves and rants about other shows on the Reader Cheers & Jeers discussion board.• We may feature your Cheer or Jeer on TVGuide.com or in TV Guide magazine! read more
  • ABC Gives Charles Gibson a Primary Time Showcase | Today's News: Our Take | 1/8/2008
Here's a novel idea for strike programming: news. ABC has scheduled for Tuesday prime time a half-hour special with World News anchor Charles Gibson reporting on the results of the New Hampshire primary. To accomodate the move, the network will pull an episode of Just for Laughs that was scheduled for the 8:30 slot. ABC may have been emboldened to try some special news coverage after seeing the ratings it scored Saturday for coverage of the Democratic debate — moderated by Gibson — which scored 9.4 million viewers and a 2.3 rating/6 share among 18- to 49 year-olds. If it whad been a sitcom, those numbers would have merited a full-season pickup. — Stephen BattaglioRelated:• Cheers & Jeers casts its vote for ABC's decision read more
