Recently I was looking at a ...

Question: Recently I was looking at a picture of Chandra Wilson in a magazine, and I was struck by how beautiful she is, while on Grey's Anatomy, she isn't that attractive. I find it interesting that most of the actors on Grey's Anatomy are made to look much worse — much more real — than they do on most TV shows. (With the exception of Alex, he's just plain cute no matter what.) It's interesting that it's still a huge show, despite the lack of an outstandingly pretty male or female... and I think it was a smart artistic move. Maybe there is hope of our culture not becoming completely superficial? Answer: I might take exception to the fact that there are no outstandingly pretty people on this show (Izzy? McDreamy? Meredith? Burke?), but one of the many things I love about Grey's Anatomy is how it allows even its most glamorous actors to look harried, unkempt and not at their best. I would never accuse the show of aiming for realism in most other regards, but I'll give them credit for ... read more

I'm a bit confused. ...

Question: I'm a bit confused. Everyone's predicting that Lost's Terry O'Quinn (John Locke) will get an Emmy nomination for outstanding supporting actor. Are they all watching the same show I am? John Locke has been the most important character this season, from his discovery of the hatch to his tragic backstory to his loss of faith. Plus, he's appeared in every episode (a feat for Lost, considering its enormous cast), save for the amazing "Other 48 Days" episode. In what world is this a "supporting" role? Do you know whether or not he'll be submitting himself in the lead or supporting categories? And if he doesn't submit himself as a lead actor, what gives? Answer: Lost is such a true ensemble series that it makes sense to me for nearly everyone in the cast to be considered a supporting player. (Matthew Fox, as the symbolic doctor/leader of the group, is exempt from this, I guess, though I'm not convinced he should be.) Terry O'Quinn was nominated in the supporting category last year, ... read more

I don't see why so many ...

Question: I don't see why so many Grey's Anatomy fans dislike Meredith and Ellen Pompeo so much. I think Pompeo plays her role very well and deserves Emmy recognition, just as about everyone else in the cast does (Patrick Dempsey, T.R. Knight, Katherine Heigl, Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson, Kate Walsh). Can you please explain this to me? Answer: Clearly one of the burning questions on one of today's hottest shows. I'm constantly arguing in the office with those who think she's a maddening slut, when I think she's just a fascinating mess. Meredith is a polarizing figure because she makes so many bad decisions and beats herself up to the point where she comes off like a total whiner, which can be annoying to many but totally relatable to just as many. Like Tamara, who writes: "So what does it say about me that I really like Meredith and enjoy watching her struggle? My twenties were like that — a constant emotional struggle, and I wasn't necessarily heroic in my struggles, either, nor did I ... read more

Grey's Anatomy Remember the year...

Grey's AnatomyRemember the year Alias followed the Super Bowl? ABC made sure Sydney Bristow was scantily clad so that all the testosterone-fueled football fans would keep their network on, hoping for boffo ratings. I was wondering how they would achieve the same effect tonight with Grey's, so how perfect was it to start the episode with George having a steamy dream? Hilarious. Of course, his dream ended with him confessing his love for Meredith. Oh, George. I loved how Cristina went from saying to Meredith "This is me being supportive," to "Whatever! Everybody has problems!" Cristina's second statement certainly summed up the episode. Now we all know what a Code Black is, and if you're ever in a hospital and you hear someone scream those words, leave! You read more

Please tell me anything you ...

Question: Please tell me anything you can about Sunday's post-Super Bowl episode of Grey's Anatomy!

Answer: It'll probably result in an Emmy nomination for Chandra Wilson. And I think Mark Burnett may get an idea for a new Survivor challenge after watching Christina Ricci's performance in the episode, which, BTW, starts on Super Bowl Sunday and continues the following week. Damn two-parters!

Grey's Anatomy Right away, I've...

Grey's AnatomyRight away, I've got to mention how funny it was to see Sandra Oh in that tight blue dress one hour after seeing Eva Longoria squeeze into basically the same dress. I love how Cristina and Burke's first real date went from a disaster ("You eat red meat?") to the "best date ever" after they saved a man's life. Great line (after Burke asked Cristina to operate the saw during surgery): "You won't let me pick the wine, but this you'll let me do?" Other highlights:- George was his usual hilarious self. I knew his day wasn't going to be a good one after the pigeon pooped on his bagel and then the man fell from the sky on top of the pigeon. Awesome moment when George realized the man jumped from the scaffolding on purpose. It's all about George's facial expressions read more

I know it's early, but can I ...

Question: I know it's early, but can I give an early plug for Grey's Anatomy for next year's Emmy awards? This show has quickly become appointment viewing, and each episode seems to get better and richer this season. While ABC's Desperate Housewives and Lost seem to get all the awards buzz (and deservedly so, as I love them both), I hope Grey's doesn't get lost in the shuffle. Case in point: the Oct. 16 episode, which featured another knockout performance from the fabulous Sandra Oh (which should guarantee her a second supporting-actress nomination) but also an equally brilliant performance from Chandra Wilson's Dr. Bailey, who is becoming one of my favorite characters on television. What do you think the awards prospects are for this great show? Answer: I'll be shocked if Grey's Anatomy doesn't make a good showing at the Golden Globes in January, at the very least. This show is tailor-made for the Globes: It's sexy, popular, hugely entertaining, with a sensational and (possibly more ... read more
