Made her stage debut in the chorus of 1941's No for an Answer.
Her Broadway career took off in 1949 when she landed the role of Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, introducing what would become her signature song, "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend."
Originated the role of Dolly Levi in the blockbuster Hello, Dolly!, which she performed worldwide more than 5000 times.
Published a 2002 autobiography, Just Lucky I Guess, in which she mentioned her junior-high-school sweetheart, Harry Kullijian. They were reunited after 70 years and married in 2003.
Created the Dr. Carol Channing and Harry Kullijian Foundation for the Arts in support of the arts in California's public schools.
In her 80s, toured the country performing a one-woman show, The First Eighty Years Are the Hardest.
