Carly Smithson

Chris Daughtry turned down Fuel. Adam Lambert turned down Queen (for now). But Carly Smithson said yes to Evanescence — or to most of them, at least.

The Season 7 American Idol finalist has teamed up with three former members of Evanescence to front a new rock band called The Fallen, the Los Angeles Times reports. The lineup includes Ben Moody, Rocky Gray, John Lecompt — all of whom were in Evanescence — and Marty O'Brian, who was not in the group.

Carly Smithson by Frank Micelotta/Fox, Kristy Lee Cook by Frank Micelotta/Fox

It's been barely over a week since the American Idol tour got underway, but life on the road is already presenting its shining moments and its tougher aspects for the top ten singers. Two of the Idols, Kristy Lee Cook and Carly Smithson, talked to TVGuide.com about the mixed bag of hitting the road all summer long. One of the main challenges so far, each confided, is staying connected to their main squeezes. Kristy Lee, who got engaged during Season 7, said she hasn't seen her man at all. "I get to see him on the 10th, but I don't know if he's going to any of the other shows," she lamented, adding, "It's tough. We've had a few 'moments,' because he doesn't understand what's going on, but he's starting to get the picture when I'm like, 'I can't handle this!' But he's getting the picture that he needs to be supportive. He's starting to come around."Carly also admitted that her grueling tour and rehearsal schedule has been hard for both her and her husband. "The whole [thing of] not bei... read more

VIDEO: Michael Johns and Carly Smithson Sing U2

The daytime talk divas are really going all out this week, eh? On yesterday's Ellen, which was filmed in Chicago, former Idol contestants Michael Johns and Carly Smithson gave an exclusive performance, singing a duet version of the U2 classic "One." This was much more fun than the 'repeat performances' we get during their press tour, and it's safe to say Michael Johns, in particular, would have made Bono proud with this one. — Gina DiNunno read more

Idol Boss Talks Shocking Exits, Sliding Ratings

The Britweek Launch, held Thursday night at the home of the Consul General, was a little like a ball: Nearly everyone, including the five American Idol contestants had a curfew— but forget the Midnight curfew like Cinderella had — the AI gang had to be out by 8:30!None of the Idol contestants are allowed to talk to the press until after they leave the show, so all they could do for the press was smile politely and pose for photos. Off-camera, one journalist asked Jason Castro how long it took to get his dreadlocks. The answer: 15 hours for the initial process (for real?) and a few months to let it all develop. He said he was excited to be doing Neil Diamond songs next week and that no, he wasn't planning on singing "Memory" again any time soon.Inside the garden party, where guests dined on fish and chips, Syesha chatted with friends and was overheard to say, presumably about her fate on the show, "Whatever happens, it's all good."American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe has no... read more

Controversy Could Have Kiboshed Idol's Carly Smithson

Carly Smithson on American Idol by Frank Micelotta/Fox

What would Jesus do? Isn't that always the question? Who knows, he might have said, "My child, that was a little pitchy for me."The New York Times speculates that the controversy surrounding "Jesus Christ Superstar," the movie theme song sung by Carly Smithson this week on American Idol, may have contributed to her ouster. She received the lowest number of votes among the six remaining contestants.Since the movie's release 35 years ago, the song has come under scrutiny by Christians. Many believe it portrays Jesus as unsure of his role as a religious icon. So, Idol followers, what do you think? Did Carly get caught up in controversy, or were there just simply five better performances than hers? — J.R. Whalen read more

Carly Smithson: Happiest Idol Castoff Ever?

Carly Smithson by Michael Becker/Fox

Despite having been voted off American Idol Wednesday night, Carly Smithson could be the happiest person in America (and maybe Ireland, too). Speaking with reporters on Thursday, the 6th-remaining Idol wannabe was nothing but upbeat and full of excitement to get back to her everyday life. The secret to Smithson's upbeat attitude lies in her appreciation of the experience, and her desire to move on. "I'm not that sad to be leaving," she said. "I enjoyed every minute, but we're back in two weeks to prepare for the tour." She added, "I think the show is just amazing. It's such a huge platform to launch yourself off of. Maybe if I hadn't [lasted beyond] 10th place, I might've been a little more upset, but sixth place: I don't think that's anything to be miserable about."Not only does Smithson see her accomplishment as the massive point of pride that it is, but she's relishing the prospect of time off from the Idol "bubble," which is "kind of weird," she said. The timing of her Idol end,... read more
