As a gunman holds Natalie hostage in the police station, the incident sparks Nick's memory taking him back to Berlin in 1966 and an East German family he helped escape to the west. Though arousing the suspicions of library custodian Toffler, his son Bernard and daughter Lily, Nick shows them an underground route to West Berlin and promises to lead them out after they help find an old Sanskrit text containing a cure for his vampirism. Yet, intent on keeping the book from being found, Lacroix reveals their escape plan to the secret police, resulting in Bernard's arrest and torture. Accused of working with the secret police, Nick manages to convince Toffler and Lisa that he had nothing to do with Bernard's arrest, Nick leads them out of the library just ahead of the police and later returns to rescue Bernard. After hijacking a police car, Nick drives to the catacombs where they are reunited with Lily and Toffler but, with Lacroix closing in, Nick sends the family ahead and stays to do battle with the vampire. However, when Lily turns back to help, she discovers Nick's vampirism and why he is so desperate to find the book. Finally helping them to freedom, Nick returns to the library to find it has been set ablaze, and watches helplessly as Lacroix hurls the book into the flames. Back in the present the gunman insists on taking an Asian family hostage to aid in his escape. Nick tries using his hypnotic powers to control his mind, however, when one of the family members tries to be a hero, the gunman's attention is diverted, causing Nick to lose his spell. After gaining the release of all but one of the Asians, Nick presses the gunman to release Natalie as well, but the gunman resists, pulling the pin on a hand grenade. When he appears ready to kill Natalie, Schanke shoots the gunman and Nick grabs the grenade, crushing it to prevent an explosion. Finally, upon returning to his loft, Nick finds a phone message from his dear friend Lily and her own family thanking him again for helping her family to freedom.

Diane Chambers comes back into Frasier's life when a play she wrote is being staged in Seattle. Although Frasier denies any hurt feelings over once being left at the altar by Diane, Niles suggests Frasier confront her over his resentment at her abandonment. He does so only after Diane admits that her life is a shambles, and that she needs Frasier's financial backing to produce her play. Over Niles and Martin's objections, Frasier agrees to finance Diane's play, and tells his brother and father that he and Diane have both changed. However, when Diane invites Frasier to a dress rehearsal of her 'feminist odyssey,' he instantly recognizes it as a thinly veiled reprisal of her time at the Cheers bar, complete with a bartender named 'Stan' and a pompous psychiatrist character named Dr. Franklin Crean. When Frasier sees his stage character struggle with being jilted by Diane's doppelganger, he erupts with an outburst in which he refers to Diane as the Devil. Later, Diane apologizes, and they part as friends.
