Support Your Local Sheriff! -- James Garner is a nothing short of a delight in this western spoof. The film takes place in the small western town of Calendar, a town that experiences a gold rush when gold is discovered in an open grave by Prudy Perkins (Joan Hackett). As gold prospectors flood in and out of town, the Danby clan, anxious to take advantage of the situation dispatch three sheriffs and they control the town. Into this situation, on his way to Australia, rides Jason McCullough (Garner). McCullough is an easy-going sort who just happens to be a crack shot. The town rapidly makes him sheriff. His first line of business is to break up a fight and to arrest Joe Danby (Bruce Dern) for murder.

An ex-sheriff, Ben Kane, tracks down the man who killed his son, Frank Boone, and seeks the help of a hired gunman, Billy Young, who was abandoned by his partner after killing a Mexican general. Kane becomes a marshal of Lordsburg and falls in love with a dance hall girl, Lily Beloit. When John Behan and Jesse Boone tries to kill Kane, Lily warns Kane of this. He arrests Boone and uses him as bait when he finds out that he is the son of Frank Boone.

The west gets wilder when Raquel Welch saddles up in Hannie Caulder, a sagebrush saga that combines hard-hitting action with the rowdiness of three of the most wicked villains (played by Ernest Borgnine, Strother Martin and Jack Elam) ever to ride the lone prairie. Welch is Hannie, a woman sworn to vengeance after three thugs rape her and kill her husband. At first, she has more heart than know-how. But once bounty hunter Robert Culp teaches her how to shoot, Hannie straps on her .45 and sets out to put a few notches in its handle.
