Michael Keaton ("Speechless," "Batman"), in his smash debut, Emmy-winner Shelley Long ("TV's "Cheers," "Outrageous Fortune") and Emmy-nominee Henry Winkler (TV's "Happy Days") star in this story about a meek man whose calm life takes a hectic and hilarious turn when he's talked into running a call-girl service during his night shift at the city morgue. From director Ron Howard ("Apollo 13"), with a screenplay from the Academy Award-nominated writers of "City Slickers" and "Splash", and featuring Shannen Doherty ("Beverly Hills, 90210") and a young Kevin Costner. Variety praises Keaton for his stunning performance, saying he's "funny, charming and knows how to please an audience," while the New York Post says the movie simply "leaves the audience weak with laughter." Featuring original music by Academy Award-winner Burt Bacharach and Rod Stewart.

James Hilton's beloved fantasy novel about the land of Shangri-La was given an awkward musical treatment in this extravagantly produced flop. Larry Kramer's screenplay stays close to the 1937 Frank Capra original, as a plane fleeing China crashes in the Himalayas and a mixed group of survivors discovers the magical, peaceful land of Shangri-La. Here the film becomes a full-fledged musical, with songs by Burt Bacharach and Hal David illustrating the distant realm's nature and the conflict that happiness causes amongst the survivors. Curiosity-seekers may be intrigued by the film's reputation as a notorious dud, but fans of the story would be better served by the classic original, despite a cast of well-respected names, including Peter Finch (in the Ronald Colman role), John Gielgud, Liv Ullmann, and Charles Boyer. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide.

Widely regarded as a comedy in 1960, The Apartment seems more melancholy with each passing year. Jack Lemmon plays C.C. Baxter, a go-getting office worker who loans his tiny apartment to his philandering superiors for their romantic trysts. He runs into trouble when he finds himself sharing a girlfriend (Shirley MacLaine) with his callous boss (Fred MacMurray). Director/co-writer Billy Wilder claimed that the idea for The Apartment stemmed from a short scene in the 1945 romantic drama Brief Encounter in which the illicit lovers (Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson) arrange a rendezvous in a third person's apartment. Wilder was intrigued about what sort of person would willingly vacate his residence to allow virtual strangers a playing field for hanky panky. His answer to that question wound up winning 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
