An Act Against All: The Kingdom of God on Earth -- The film 'An Act Against All,' explores the theme of how conflicts over truth test our integrity and commitment to a free society. In a provocative and heart-wrenching story we witness the difference between healthy disagreement and contemptuous disrespect that makes citizens enemies.
The theme unfolds on four levels.
First, we see that holding sincere religious or political convictions inevitably leads to conflict and a struggle to engage in honest conversations that allow mutual understanding.
Second, we observe, in spite of a Constitutional ban, many Americans employ religious testing standards in presidential elections. Jefferson was smeared as a closet atheist in 1800. Al Smith in 1928 and John Kennedy in 1960 were plagued with anti-Catholicism. In the 2008 and 2012 election cycles many claim that Barak Obama's 'covert' Islamic allegiance and Mitt Romney's devout Mormonism render them unfit for office.
Third, we clarify how irresolvable conflicts over religion or values provide a difficult test of our willingness to allow freedom of persuasive expression when we believe opposing voices threaten the well-being of society and loved ones.
And fourth, we follow the personal journey of the film's director and narrator, Bryan Hall, a provincial Mormon who during the 2008 campaign saw Evangelicals as hated enemies, and then decides to confront their leaders, professors and preachers with accusations of unfairness. He has astounding experiences that soften his heart to trust and even befriend adversaries whose religious and political views differ markedly from his.
