A woman is escorting her two children and her sister across the country to Colorado aboard a stagecoach when the stage is ambushed by a strange group of Indians. It turns out that the Indians are actually bandits in disguise, and the party is left stranded in the attack. The family must find their way to civilization through the wilderness, while the bandits scour the woods looking for their would-be victims. Corbin Bernsen, Brion James, and Sonny Landham play the bandits, while Charlotte Ross, Vivian Schilling, Corey Carrier, and Mercedes McNab play the family left to fend for themselves. Charles Napier appears as one of the stagecoach drivers, and Graham Greene plays an Indian who befriends the lost travelers. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide.

Scientist Dr. Henderson (Stephen McHattie) wants to analyze the beast's body chemistry, which he believes has healing properties, but he continually butts heads with a vengeful, violent cop (Brion James) whose partner was swallowed up by the creature. Henderson enlists the aid of a waitress (Cynthia Belliveau), a pair of gravediggers, and a pretty sheriff's deputy (Neve Campbell) in hunting the mega-rodent, but his plans turn awry thanks to the murderous meddling of the cop, who proves to be far more monstrous than the monster. Director Craig Pryce keeps the monster shrouded in darkness for much of the film, and its climactic appearance is not disappointing. Excellent performances, a tight script, and good use of the claustrophobic sets make this effective chiller worth seeking out. ~ Cavett Binion

The beefy Swede plays Soviet KGB agent Lt. Nikolai, who is sent to Africa with orders to eliminate a black rebel. Eventually, Nikolai begins to side with the locals, has a red scorpion tattooed on his chest by a shaman, and helps fight against the Cubans and the Soviets. Horror fans should note Tom Savini's expert gore effects during a torture scene, while others will be pleased with a fine supporting cast including M. Emmet Walsh, Carmen Argenziano, and Brion James. The film was originally commissioned by Warner Bros., which dropped it after controversy over its South African genesis, but they might as well have dropped it for its endless desert treks and uninvolving screenplay. An unrelated Canadian sequel followed five years later. ~ Robert Firsching, All Movie Guide.
