Bob Schieffer: Is the End Near?

Bob Schieffer by John Paul Filo/CBS

Once the presidential election campaign heats up, Sunday-morning public affairs shows such as Face the Nation are must-views for political junkies. But this time around we'll also be watching a victory lap for CBS News' chief Washington correspondent and Face moderator Bob Schieffer, who expects the 2008 campaign to be the last he'll cover for the network he's called home for more than 30 years. The Biz recently caught Schieffer's country band Honky Tonk Confidential in New York and we're happy to report he has a music career to fall back on. He shared his thoughts about 2008 and beyond.TVGuide.com: I hate to even say this, but will this really be your last presidential cycle?Bob Schieffer: It probably is. I've always left that as something of a question mark. I'm going to stay for sure through the inauguration. Quite frankly, I don't know what I'm going to do after that. I'll have some sort of relationship with CBS. But I think Inauguration Day is probably going to be my last in th... read more

A Morning Person GMA's new exec producer has a plan to get to No. 1

Robin Roberts and Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America

Jim Murphy has returned to the morning-TV wars. On July 19 he was named the new executive producer of ABC's Good Morning America, which has been entrenched in second place behind NBC's Today for over a decade. But Murphy knows it could be worse: In the 1990s he helmed CBS This Morning, which struggled to get attention because the network still disdained morning TV's breezy blend of newsmaker interviews, cooking segments and pop concerts. That's no longer the case. As Murphy told the Biz, morning shows are now the main profit engines of all news divisions and are getting more attention than ever. We talked to Murphy about the new gig he's taking on after a six-year stint at CBS Evening News.  TVGuide.com: You left morning TV in 1998. How has it changed since then?Jim Murphy: It's become more competitive, for all the obvious reasons. It's the on read more

Brokaw Has a Global Warming Warning

Tom Brokaw, Global Warming: What You Need to Know

Since leaving the NBC Nightly News anchor chair in 2004, Tom Brokaw has been anything but "retired." As host of Global Warming: What You Need to Know (premiering Sunday at 9 pm/ET on Discovery Channel), the newsman posits some reasons for our planet's higher fever.

TV Guide: Why'd you get involved with the documentary?
Tom Brokaw:
I've been watching [the issue] for some time, and like a lot of people I've been trying to figure out the difference between fact and fiction. The scientific consensus is now pretty overwhelming. There are still scientists out there who will be dismissive of it, but more and more are signing on. What's been so striking to me is that more read more

Good Evening, America Charles Gibson discusses his transition to ABC's evening chair

Charles Gibson

After Charles Gibson was named anchor of ABC World News Tonight, he got a call from a colleague saying, "The tortoise has won the race." Indeed, after all the hype about traveling anchors, webcasts and updates for the West Coast, the network turned to its most experienced and least flashy veteran to head its flagship broadcast. Gibson takes over for Elizabeth Vargas, who has been flying solo since coanchor Bob Woodruff sustained read more

THE HEATON'S ON?

OK, Katie Couric is replacing Bob Schieffer and Meredith Vieira is replacing Katie. But who will fill Mer's chair at The View? Insiders tell the New York Post that Everybody Loves Raymond's Patricia Heaton — who has been eyeing a View-like talker of her own — is a front-runner. But the addition of Heaton, a Republican, could dictate the replacement of like-minded Elizabeth Hasselbeck (with, perhaps, a Latino audience-grabber like Fuse TV's Marianela Pereyra), a source tells the paper. A View rep labels the buzz as "rumor and conjecture," saying it will be some time before Vieira's successor is named. read more
