This fanciful comedy stars Shirley MacLaine as Harriet Blossom, the neglected wife of brassiere manufacturer Robert (Richard Attenborough), whose passion in life is music. Harriet's boredom is solved when she hides Ambrose Tuttle (James Booth), one of Robert's workers, in the attic. Harriet and Ambrose enjoy a love affair for several years, during which detectives search for him, and Robert is driven to a nervous breakdown by the noises overhead.
