Bob Dylan Fast Facts:
  • Shocked many of his fans by "going electric" in the mid-1960s, drawing boos at concerts. When a fan at an event in England called him "Judas," he responded by leading his band into an earsplitting version of "Like a Rolling Stone," his groundbreaking 1965 single that Rolling Stone magazine named the greatest rock song of all time.
  • Scenes of him flipping lyric cards of "Subterranean Homesick Blues" in the 1967 documentary Don't Look Back is widely considered a precursor to the modern music video.
  • Recipient of a Lifetime Grammy Award at the 1991 ceremony and a Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.
  • Won three Grammy Awards for his Time Out of Mind CD at the 1998 ceremony, while his son Jakob won a songwriting Grammy for the Wallflowers' hit "One Headlight."
  • Compelling 2004 memoir, Chronicles: Volume One, was a best-seller and was nominated for a National Book Critics award.
  • Began hosting an acclaimed XM satellite radio show in 2006.
  • In 2008, he received a Pulitzer Prize Special Citation for his impact on music, and culture in general.
  • That same year, a road, Bob Dylan Pathway, honored him in his birth town of Duluth, Minn.
  • The following year, threw fans a typical curveball by releasing a CD of Christmas songs, Christmas in the Heart.
  • As he neared his 70th birthday in 2011, AARP The Magazine turned to such luminaries as Bruce Springsteen ("Bob Dylan is the father of my country") and Maya Angelou ("he speaks for the American soul as much as Ray Charles did") for comments.
  • That same year, drew attention (not all of it flattering) for going along with authorities in China, while touring there, in not performing two songs to which they objected: "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Desolation Row."
