Back in December, Matthew Ashford departed from the Days of our Lives canvas when his suicidal character, Jack Devereaux, drove his car off an icy bridge. Despite this, the NBC sudser insists that Ashford — who has "died" and returned to Days before — is still under contract. Here, TVGuide.com gets answers from the fan-fave himself.
TVGuide.com: Days says you're still under contract. True?Matthew Ashford: Yes. I was back [on Jan. 26] shooting a scene where Jennifer (Melissa Reeves) finds a pair of Jack's cufflinks. It wasn't specified, but I think I'm not [there as] a ghost. I think I'm just a figment of Jen's imagination. I just say, "Jennifer, get on with it. If you want to give Frankie a kiss, go ahead, move on." It wasn't maudlin, it was very upbeat. [Editor's n
Devotees of Matthew Ashford are worried about the Days of our Lives star. His heroic alter ego, Jack Devereaux, has been having suicidal thoughts ever since he was stricken with an unspecified, mysterious soap illness that supposedly guarantees him a slow, painful death. Worse yet, he drove his car off an icy bridge last week. In today's episode, Jack's wrecked auto will be dredged out of the river — and no body will be found inside.
So, has the NBC sudser sacrificed Ashford and his classic character just to push Jack's saintly wife, Jennifer (Melissa Reeves
) back into the arms of ex-boyfriend Frankie (Billy Warlock
)? Is this the bitter end of Jack and Jen's love story? Don't bet on it. "What we are able to say is that Matt is still
a contract player," a Days
rep tells TVGuide.com. "We can't give any specifics. Sorry!" Guess we'll just have to stay tuned....
All My Children: Rumor has it Rebecca Budig — & aka Mrs. Bachelor Bob Guiney — will likely opt to leave her role as the baby-hungry Greenlee Smythe Lavery when her contract expires this summer. While Budig tries her luck in prime-time TV and films, she'll still have her hosting gig on the WE channel's Full Frontal Fashion to fall back on. Smart gal.
The Bold and the Beautiful: Last week, you read here that B&B had finally settled on a name for Antonio Sabato Jr.'s mysterious new Italian stallion character: Dante di Napoli. Well, "final" decisions were made to be changed, kids. He is now called Dante Damiano. (Much better. I enjoy the alliteration, don't you?) He first airs June 16. For more on Dante's inferno of passion, read Hunter Tylo's dish in the latest Soaps Q&A.
