  • DVD Tuesday: A Simple Plan + the Love of Blood Money = Disaster | Ask FlickChick | 8/27/2007
Last week it seemed that everything was conspiring to remind me of A Simple Plan: seeing the trailer for the Coen brothers' upcoming No Country for Old Men (based on the Cormac McCarthy novel), stumbling across Stephen King's rave review of Scott B. Smith's second novel, The Ruins, having an argument about what The Bible says is the root of all evil. So rather than ignore the signs and portents, it's my DVD Tuesday pick. Directed by Sam Raimi and based on Smith's debut novel, A Simple Plan is a terrific example of what may be my favorite kind of thriller, the kind where someone makes a mistake that snowballs until he or she has lost everyone and everything that matters, and all efforts to make things right just make them worse. It's the quintessential noir plot, and while the poor, put-upon victim of cruel fate seems fated to get trapped in some cosmic web, the fact is he or she consistently — masochistically, it often seems — makes exactly the wrong decision, which... read more

While Randy Newman will kick things off with his own take on Aug. 13, other singers to listen for throughout Season 3 include Joan Baez, (not Martin) Donovan, ex-Spearhead front man Michael Franti, the hip-hop band The Individuals, Angelique Kidjo, the Latin band Kinky, experimental rockers Man Man, Persephone's Bees, the Shins and Billy Bob Thornton. read more
  • May 24, 2007: Throw Your Horns Up High! | VH1 Rock Honors | 5/25/2007
Tons of kids wearing black and metal horns high. It's the VH1 Rock Honors baby, yeah! Right now, my iPod is filled with nothing but '80s music and metal. So naturally, the second annual Rock Honors was highly anticipated in the Steed household. Over the past week, I've closed my eyes to not read any reviews of the show by critics who've never gotten near a ZZ Top album. So what you read below is my opinion only. Hell, yeah!!! That phrase could describe many points during the night, so let's run it down from the beginning. I hate Nickelback! I think they are the absolute bottom of the barrel, the point at which all bad music is judged. The Mendoza Line of the music world. Naturally then, you can probably understand that when they opened this broadcast my horns slithered away. But — and Lord, forgive me for saying this, but I promise this will be the only time — Nickelback actually rocked. D'oh. Making that statement almost makes me vomit, but it's true. Their performance... read more
