Controversial Vanity Fair Writer Christopher Hitchens Dies at 62

Christopher Hitchens

Controversial writer Christopher Hitchens, whose works slammed religion as well as such public figures as Mother Teresa and Henry Kissinger, has died, according to the Vanity Fair. He was 62.

Hitchens, who was a contributing editor to the magazine for nearly two decades, died of pneumonia at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston after a long battle with esophageal cancer.

Chelsea Clinton will become a full-time correspondent for NBC News, according to The New York Times.

The former first daughter will begin her duties immediately and is expected to work on the "Making a Difference" segment of NBC Nightly News which spotlights people who volunteer to improve the lives of others in their community.

Dorothy Rodham, mother of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, died Tuesday. She was 92.

Rodham died shortly after midnight in Washington, surrounded by her family, the Clintons said in a statement.

The United States Senate voted to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy Saturday, effectively allowing gay men and lesbians in the military to be open about their sexual orientation, according to The New York Times.

The law, which was passed in 1993 under President Bill Clinton's administration, was criticized by many for discriminating against homosexual troops. The repeal, which passed the Senate by a 65-31 vote, fulfills President Barack Obama's promise to reverse the ban.
