Was the senior class president in high school.
Appeared on Broadway in the original production of Fiddler on the Roof for three years. Her sister Judith was hit and killed by a taxi while visiting New York to see Midler perform in the show.
Developed her stage persona, the Divine Miss M, performing at the Continental Baths, a gay men's bathhouse in New York City, with Barry Manilow accompanying her on piano.
Her ex-boyfriend Peter Riegert appeared opposite her in the 1993 TV-movie of Gypsy.
