Exec Producer Betsy Thomas: There's Room Among NBC's Snobby Sitcoms for Whitney's Comedy

Whitney Cummings and Chris D’Elia

NBC's Thursday night lineup was once dubbed Must-See TV — and with shows like The Office, Community and Parks and Recreation leading the comedy block, it's hard to say things have really changed from the days when Friends and Seinfeld once held court. This makes it even more challenging for new comedy Whitney to gain its footing at 9:30/8:30c, a spot previously held by the likes of 30 Rock, which returns midseason, and the short-lived Outsourced.

Whitney: How Different Is Whitney Cummings From Her TV Persona, Really?

Whitney Cummings

Sure, it's common in sitcoms for actors and their characters to share the same first name. (Tony Danza, Charlie Sheen and Joey Lawrence are all perfect example). But for NBC's new sitcom Whitney — on which Whitney Cummings plays, wait for it, Whitney Cummings — drawing a line in the sand between the fictional photographer and the real-life raunchy comedian seems a bit more difficult. "We try to keep the TV Whitney as likable as possible," Cummings joked about the difference between herself and her character at Thursday's Paley Center fall TV preview panel, which was moderated by TV Guide Magazine's Rob Moynihan. But seriously, how different are they? We offer a few helpful tips for telling the two apart.

Christina Applegate, Debra Messing

Following Fox's head start on pilot pickups, NBC has ordered comedies from Whitney Cummings and Parks & Recreation writer Emily Spivey, along with drama series Smash and Prime Suspect, Deadline.com reports.

Fall 2011 TV Scorecard: Which shows are returning? Which aren't?

Spivey's Up All Night (which TVGuide.com had spotlighted as one of its 11 Promising Pilots) is an irreverent look at parenthood from the perspectives of an acerbic working mother (Christina Applegate), her... read more

Cheers & Jeers: My Boys Don't Cry!

My Boys

Cheers to My Boys for weathering the loss of one of their own.

TBS' endearing-underdog sitcom has always coasted on the chemistry of its ensemble, so the news that the reliably hilarious Jim Gaffigan wouldn't return for Season 4 as Jordana Spiro's droll brother gave fans cause for concern... read more

The New Episodes Are Coming....

Hey, all. So, we just wrapped shooting for the season, and we had a blast! We've got some great new episodes ready to roll out this summer, very excited. I was just talking to Jim Gaffigan, Mike Bunin and Jamie Kaler, and we were all saying how much fun we had shooting the latest installments of TBS' My Boys. Maybe it was all the caffeine and booze, but I seriously don't think I've ever laughed as hard as I did working with these guys. We had some great guest stars, we brought back our favorite directors, and basically just kept on doin' what we did last year, only more of it. Think you're really gonna dig the new stuff. Hope you're all looking forward to the new episodes as much as I am. See you Monday, July 30, at 10pm/ET! read more

An Introduction to Me and My Boys

Hey, readers. Thanks for showing up at my very first My Boys blog! So the first bit of business: Who am I? My name is Jordana Spiro, and I play PJ on TBS' new comedy series My Boys. I don't really know anything about blogging, except that it's apparently the wave of the future, and it's a fun word to say. That being said, I will do my best to make this interesting, and feel free to let me know if there is anything specifically you want to know about. I'm sure some of you ladies will soon develop crushes on several of the boys in my cast and will want to know details about them. Well, I pride myself on my honesty, so I will only charge a small fee for anything they have told me in private. Second bit of business: What is My Boys? And here it goes... My Boys: The Prologue (because it hasn't started airing yet — which it will on Nov. 28 at 10 pm/ET on TBS, shameless time-slot reminder). My Boys is about this girl, PJ, and all of her guy friends. PJ is a sportswriter for the Ch... read more
