The conflicts between the duties and responsibilities of political and social conscience and the often-conflicting responsibilities toward family and loved ones are considered in director Gillian Armstrong's drama of a political prisoner's return to his family in Miami after eight long years of imprisonment in Cuba. Nestor (Jimmy Smits) discovers that his daughter has forgotten him and that his wife (Greta Scacchi) has fallen in love with an American fisherman. His immediate duty is to heal his troubled and broken family. Stock market millionaire Chris Thorne (Chevy Chase) and investment lawyer Diane Lightson (Demi Moore) are headed to Atlantic City when they take the wrong exit off the New Jersey Turnpike. A local cop (John Candy) stops them for speeding in a curious town, where they're brought before 106-year-old Judge Alvin Valkenheiser (Dan Aykroyd). But the old man's punishment turns out to be as bizarre as he is.

Saved off the shores of Miami by a fisherman, she soon falls deeply in love with her rescuer. But just as she's on the verge of building a life with him, Nestor unexpectedly appears.
