Met first wife Mercedes Delpino when they performed together as a vaudeville dance act.
Best known for playing the Cowardly Lion in 1939's The Wizard of Oz.
Starred opposite E.G. Marshall in the first New York production of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot in 1956.
Appeared in a series of commercials for Lay's Potato Chips with the memorable tagline "Betcha can't eat just one."
Died while filming his final movie, The Night They Raided Minsky's; the producers had to hire a body double to finish the film.
