Bernardo Bertolucci Fast Facts:

Directed two short films at 15 years old.
Dropped out of the University of Rome to serve as an assistant director for filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini.
His collection of poems, In Search of Mystery, won the Italian literary award Premio Viareggio in 1962.
Made documentaries for Shell Oil before joining Italy's Communist Party in the late 1960s.
Collaborated with his brother-in-law, screenwriter Mark Peploe, on The Last Emperor, and both won Oscars for Best Writing.
Collaborated with his wife, Clare Peploe, on the script for La Luna (1979), a drama about incest starring Jill Clayburgh; Peploe was also an assistant director on his film 1900, an epic about Italian fascism.
