Grew up thinking he would become a doctor, like his father, but wound up becoming an actor, like his mother.
Made his TV debut in 1966, in the British soap Coronation Street.
Made his London stage debut in 1966, in a musical produced by Beatles manager Brian Epstein, and was offered a recording contract by Beatles recording manager Dick James, but declined.
Became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967.
While researching his title role in Gandhi (1982), he discovered he had paternal ancestors that hailed from the same village as Mahatma Gandhi in Gujarat, India.
Made his Broadway debut in 1984 in Kean, the one-man show about 19th-century English actor Edmund Kean; his second wife, Alison Sutcliffe, directed.
In 2001, it was announced he would be knighted by Queen Elizabeth.
Cofounded the U.K.-based production shingle SBK Pictures in 2007.
