Strike Watch: Separation Anxiety on Thursday Night

Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy by Ron Tom/ABC

Around the time Bailey got a big hug from McDreamy, comforting her in her hour of need, my heart began to break. Not so much for Bailey—I felt for her, but figured her little boy would be OK—but for fans of Thursday night TV, who were enjoying their last “normal” night of mostly original programming for the foreseeable future.Parting is such sweet sorrow even under normal circumstances, when a typical season ends on schedule in May. But to have premature and unintended strike-imposed “finales” so soon into the new year, and just as some of these shows are hitting their stride (not just Grey’s Anatomy, but also Desperate Housewives, Gossip Girl and 30 Rock, to name just a few shows that aired first-rate original episodes this week that just happened to be the last ones in the can), it feels wrong. In fact, it sucks. At least we have two more episodes of Ugly Betty to enjoy until its inventory is depleted. Last night was a typical hoot, with Annie Pot... read more

Ugly Betty's Devilish Marc: A Nice Guy After All

Michael Urie, Ugly Betty

His Texas roots and career beginnings as a broke thespian in New York have molded Michael Urie, the deliciously devious assistant Marc St. James on Ugly Betty (Thursdays, 8 pm/ET on ABC), into a down-to-earth guy off stage. TV Guide: What do you and your character, Marc St. James, have in common?
Michael Urie:

Ugly Betty's Becki Newton Channels Her Inner Vixen

Becki Newton, Ugly Betty

Ugly Betty's scene-stealing bad girl Becki Newton talks to TV Guide about shaking her booty, stalking Tim Gunn and finding love. (ABC's Ugly Betty airs Thursdays at 8 pm/ET.) TV Guide: How do you get in touch with your inner vixen to play Amanda? Becki Newton: I think of the girls I used to meet at New York City auditions. Girls have a great way of sizing each other up with a look that can debilitate everyone. I was usually the victim of that. I've always been more the Betty than the Amanda. But after years of studying those girls, I've learned how to channel it. TV Guide: You felt like Betty? Newton: Always. I think everyone does. The Amandas of the world are covering up a lot of pain by trying to be the one who makes other read more

In Praise of Dwight Schrute

Now there's a line I never imagined I'd find myself typing: "In Praise of Dwight Schrute." Before I explain further, can I just say: How awesome are Thursday nights this season? This week, I truly needed escapism (I have a number of friends who are directly affected by the Time Inc. cutbacks that were announced Thursday, a very sad development for a very battered business), so I opted to watch the ABC lineup in more or less real time, and was richly rewarded.First, Ugly Betty. Sheer delight. Couldn't be happier for its, and America Ferrera's, Golden Globe wins. In especially fine form this week: Becki Newton as Amanda, who's a scintillating hoot even when she's manipulated into planning treachery against Daniel or calling our Betty a "stumpy troll." I also love how Betty is introducing Daniel to the finer things in life, like slices (although that looked like a full pizza) at the corner parlor and, gulp, karaoke. Took the sour taste of this week's American Idol auditions right out of... read more

Becki Newton Shares Her Ugly Betty Clothes Calls

Becki Newton, Ugly Betty

Becki Newton gives mean girls a good name. As Amanda, the cruel but couture-blessed receptionist on ABC's Ugly Betty (Thursdays at 8 pm/ET), Newton has turned insults into an art form and taken a spot beside America Ferrera as the freshman hit's other breakout-star-to-be. Since she's so good at answering the phones, TV Guide decided to ring her up. TV Guide: Amanda's definitely not above stealing the show, huh? Becki Newton: Honestly, I thought that, on a weekly basis, I'd be at the round desk being mean to Betty whenever she walked in. The fact that I get to go into different rooms and harass other people? It's amazing. TV Guide: On the Jan. 4 episode, the staff raids Christina's closet for free clothes. Have any o read more
