Giggling at the antics of the slap-happy contestants who “come on down” at what he calls “the happiest place on Earth,” Drew Carey looks like he’s having a blast, and looks right at home, on the spiffed-up set of The Price Is Right as he takes over as host today. There’s no fuss and no ceremony, and outside of the introduction telling us we’re at the Bob Barker Studio in Television City, and that one of the games is still called “Barker’s Bargain Bar,” and that Carey chooses to sign off with the traditional plea to have your pets spayed, there’s no actual homage to the former host as the new Price era begins.And yet, probably the greatest tribute to Bob Barker is that the show goes on, and goes on effortlessly with its funny-looking new ringleader, who appears to be genuinely tickled at the breathless excitement of the frantic folks who come to play the game. We didn't need a voice-over (all my respect to Meredith Grey) to spell out the symbolism cutting through this episode, and I'm feeling everyone's in for a rocky road (check out my interview with Rick Gomez for more). But it's all about second chances, right?Side note: I know it's supposed to be about Brian (Barry Watson), but can I just say that Dave (Rick Gomez) is the one who has me watching? The quiet guy. The guy who had the real thing and wants it back. The guy who calls his wife in the middle of a bachelor party. And I'm sure if she asked him to, he'd keep those fuzzy red handcuffs around his wrists for days, despite the embarrassment, if it meant helping his marriage. Question: So… What About Brian?

Answer: Another one I liked but didn't love. As much as it pains me to say it, my problem is with Sarah Lancaster and Barry Watson as a couple. There's no heat, passion, spark. And I'm kinda over the whole "girl gets engaged to guy even though she secretly loves his best friend" thing. It's been done to death.

Question: What do you think about the cancellation of 7th Heaven at the end of this season? Personally, I think it should've been canceled several years ago. In the first half of its 10 seasons it was actually about family and morality and whatnot, but now it's completely different. The whole premise to every show is a couple of the characters talking, usually with one of the Camdens listening in and basically hearing what they want to hear, which is not the whole truth. After that, they spend the rest of the show talking behind each others' backs until someone finally says something. I don't know about you, but I like a show with more than just one story line. What ever happened to good, quality, family programming? Answer: The family drama is an endangered species, no question, but I contend it's still alive and well on Everwood. I'll let your opinion stand, because I don't watch 7th Heaven consistently (although I will be doing some homework soon for an upcoming column). But taking ... read more

7th Heaven Casting Shakeups

7th Heaven just started its 10th season, which will include lots of surprises for its loyal fans — some good, some bad. For starters, troubled actor Jeremy London won't be returning to the WB family drama, nor will Ashlee Simpson or Rachel Blanchard. However, original cast members Barry Watson and David Gallagher are back as the prodigal Camden sons, Matt and Simon. "We're focusing on our core family again," says creator/executive producer Brenda Hampton. "As the show gets older, you want to give people as much as you can of the thing that they watched it for. And in this case, it's the Camden family." Watson and Gallagher both return for 11 episodes, so we'll have the opportunity to see the boys dealing with some more adult situations. In fact, Simon "will be the first Camden to have sex outside of marriage." Pretty risqué for the son of a preacher man! The big story this season will read more
