Barry Levinson Fast Facts:

Began his career as a stand-up comic, which led to an Emmy-winning stint as a performer and writer on The Carol Burnett Show.
Cowrote and appeared in the Mel Brooks comedies Silent Movie (1976) and High Anxiety (1977).
Made his directorial debut in 1982 with the semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale Diner.
Executive-produced the gritty TV crime drama Homicide: Life on the Street, and also directed the pilot episode.
Several of Levinson's movies are set in his hometown of Baltimore, including Diner, Tin Men, Avalon and Liberty Heights.
