Babs Admits to Affair With Married Politician!

Yesterday, the infamous Barbara Walters appeared on Oprah to reveal some of her innermost secrets that she's written about in her new tell-all memoir. And one doozy (beyond the Star Jones/Rosie drama) she divulged was her secret love affair of two years with the U.S. Senate's first-ever African-American member thirty years ago. Whatever you do, don't make the same mistake Oprah did by calling this independent woman a "mistress" because that didn't go over well at all. Perhaps Babs would have preferred the term "lady friend." Or how about "extramarital activist"? "Concubine"? read more

Barbara Walters Gets Personal in Her Audition

Barbara Walters

After five decades in TV news, Barbara Walters has finally written her autobiography. Audition: A Memoir (Knopf, $29.95) hits the stores May 6, the day Walters is on The Oprah Winfrey Show.  "It will be unusual for me to be answering the questions instead of asking them," she says with a hint of nerves. Though she saved the details of her sizzling secret affair with the married Edward Brooke, the nation's first black U.S. Senator, for the Oprah appearance, the Queen of "Gets" sat down with TV Guide to talk about her "extremely personal — maybe too personal — story. TV Guide: You've always been discreet about your personal life.  Why a memoir now? Barbara Walters: It's a time in my life when I'm very happy and very much at peace. I don't have anything to lose read more

Barbara Walters Previews Her Most Fascinating List

Barbara Walters, 10 Most Fascinating People

When her first 10 Most Fascinating People special aired, Barbara Walters wondered whether anyone would be interested. Well, 15 years later, what's now an annual ritual is still going strong, and Thursday night (10:02 pm/ET, ABC) it serves up Bill Clinton, David and Victoria Beckham, Justin Timberlake, Katherine Heigl, Jennifer Hudson, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, and MySpace founders Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe. (There's also a "surprise" interview, as well as the always-secret "Most Fascinating Person.") TV Guide: So, how does one get on your prestigious list?Barbara Walters: We knew that we wanted to do the Beckhams, and because each of them is famous, they're two of my people. I had never interviewed them and I [feared] they're such huge celebrities they're going to want special this, special that... but they were just adorable. You don't have to be famous, but we don't want read more

Barbara Walters Is Thankful for Finished Autobiography

Heads up, Star and Rosie! Your former colleague and boss Barbara Walters has finally finished her memoirs. The news vet turned producer/host of The View announced on Monday's talker that after 1 1/2 years at the keyboard, she finished writing her autobiography over the Thanksgiving weekend. The tome is due in bookstores in May, she reports, and has "a great title"... which she wouldn't reveal. "I hate this book," Walters said several times, presumably joking. "It's too personal!" She may hate it, but we love it! Not that we expect any real dirt on the rich and famous from the always politic Ms. Walters. (Just a little grime will do.) — Ileane Rudolph read more

The New View: No Big Whoop

Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters by Steve Fenn/ABC

Whoopi Goldberg has always had a wonderfully distinct point of view, and one that’s probably just right for her new job on The View. But unlike her immediate predecessor in the cohost seat, this POV is not trained entirely on herself. For me, that’s a relief.Tuesday’s 11th-season opening of ABC’s daytime squawk show was a pretty low-key lovefest, as the gang embraced Whoopi while catching fans up on how they spent their summer vacation: Elisabeth Hasselbeck became more noticeably pregnant, Joy Behar nursed a virus and Barbara Walters made progress on her memoirs. Elizabeth and Joy displayed family photos. And Whoopi? Didn’t have much to reveal about herself (though she did sit for a pro forma taped biographical profile at the end). She’s just a hardworking gal these days, spending four hours on the radio each early a.m. before heading over to the Hot Topics table. Are these back-to-back morning gigs going to stretch her too thin? Whoopi seemed almost too... read more
