Barbara Walters, 10 Most Fascinating People
When her first 10 Most Fascinating People special aired, Barbara Walters wondered whether anyone would be interested. Well, 15 years later, what's now an annual ritual is still going strong, and Thursday night (10:02 pm/ET, ABC) it serves up Bill Clinton, David and Victoria Beckham, Justin Timberlake, Katherine Heigl, Jennifer Hudson, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, and MySpace founders Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe. (There's also a "surprise" interview, as well as the always-secret "Most Fascinating Person.")
TV Guide: So, how does one get on your prestigious list?Barbara Walters: We knew that we wanted to do the Beckhams, and because each of them is famous, they're two of my people. I had never interviewed them and I [feared] they're such huge celebrities they're going to want special this, special that... but they were just adorable. You don't have to be famous, but we don't want
Barbara Walters has landed the first interview with disgraced radio shock jock Don Imus since he was fired last April. The I-man will talk with Walters on her annual 10 Most Fascinating People of 2007 special that airs Dec. 6 on ABC. Imus is making his return to radio on Monday, when he takes over the morning slot on Citadel Broadcasting's WABC. CBS Radio and cable outlet MSNBC canned him after his racist and sexist on-air comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team. Stephen Battaglio
Heads up, Star and Rosie! Your former colleague and boss Barbara Walters has finally finished her memoirs. The news vet turned producer/host of The View announced on Monday's talker that after 1 1/2 years at the keyboard, she finished writing her autobiography over the Thanksgiving weekend. The tome is due in bookstores in May, she reports, and has "a great title"... which she wouldn't reveal. "I hate this book," Walters said several times, presumably joking. "It's too personal!" She may hate it, but we love it! Not that we expect any real dirt on the rich and famous from the always politic Ms. Walters. (Just a little grime will do.) Ileane Rudolph

Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters by Steve Fenn/ABC
Whoopi Goldberg has always had a wonderfully distinct point of view, and one thats probably just right for her new job on The View. But unlike her immediate predecessor in the cohost seat, this POV is not trained entirely on herself. For me, thats a relief.Tuesdays 11th-season opening of ABCs daytime squawk show was a pretty low-key lovefest, as the gang embraced Whoopi while catching fans up on how they spent their summer vacation: Elisabeth Hasselbeck became more noticeably pregnant, Joy Behar nursed a virus and Barbara Walters made progress on her memoirs. Elizabeth and Joy displayed family photos. And Whoopi? Didnt have much to reveal about herself (though she did sit for a pro forma taped biographical profile at the end). Shes just a hardworking gal these days, spending four hours on the radio each early a.m. before heading over to the Hot Topics table. Are these back-to-back morning gigs going to stretch her too thin? Whoopi seemed almost too...
Barbara Walters by Donna Svennevik/ABC
Rosie O'Donnell may have left The View in a huff, but she still has only good things to say about Barbara Walters on her blog. And just today Walters told reporters that she "has nothing but warm feelings for Rosie" and that O'Donnell is welcome to come back as a guest though probably not as a guest host. So we asked Walters if Rosie had sent her a copy of Celebrity Detox, her new book (due out Oct. 2), which reportedly deconstructs O'Donnell's tempestuous year as moderator on The View. Yes, she did, Walters says. Did she read it? Yes, I did. Would she give us her opinion of the tell-all? No, I dont think so. Guess well have to wait until Walter's own long-awaited memoir comes out this spring. Reporting by Ileane Rudolph
Bill Geddie and Barbara Walters by Michael O'Neil/ABC
It may have been Whoopi Goldberg's first day as the new View moderator, but the show's powers-that-be, Barbara Walters and fellow executive producer Bill Geddie, were already thinking ahead this morning.Walters tells TV Guide that the long-vacant fifth seat will be filled "very soon," definitely before Elisabeth Hasselbeck's maternity leave starts in early November. Though they won't disclose the identity of their top choice, they did reveal that the new host will be a woman who has guest-hosted in the past. "It is someone you will know; we're not trying out any more," Geddie says. "Nobody need send me tapes. This is it, it's happening soon." So let's welcome Sherri
who knows?! Well keep you posted. Reporting by Ileane RudolphUPDATE: Barbara Walters subsequently announced on Wednesday's show that the new panelist still unnamed would start Monday, Sept. 10.
Princess Diana courtesy NBC
August 31 will mark 10 years since Princess Diana of Wales died in a high-speed car crash in Paris. For weeks it was a major saga that consumed television news. Here's how some of the journalists who covered it remember the shocking tragedy.Piers Morgan of America's Got Talent who was then the editor of Englands Daily Mirror: I went out to dinner on the night she died. I got a call about 1 am U.K. time saying her car had been in an accident and that Dodi Fayed was hurt and Diana was OK. Then I got a call saying Dodi was dead. By then I realized this was a huge international news story. So I went to my office at the Daily Mirror, we marshalled our team, and by 3:30 or 4 am we had 200 journalists in the newsroom. At 4 am I got a call from one of our journalists who was with British royal secretary Robin Cook, who had heard from the French ambassador that Diana was dead. I remember sitting back in my chair feeling a mixture of emotions. On a professional level, I thought this was...
Whoopi Goldberg by Theo Wargo/WireImage.com
After weeks of speculation, Barbara Walters announced live on The View today that Whoopi Goldberg will be the new cohost of the daily ABC chatfest."I love you guys. This is a big ol' thrill for me," said Goldberg when she was introduced on the show this morning. "The thing I'm looking forward to the most is all the hot topics."After joining cohosts Walters, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck on The View for the big announcement, Goldberg closed the show in true View fashion: "Have a great day, everyone, and take a little time to enjoy the view."I have known Whoopi for years," Walters said in a statement. "She is brilliant, funny and irrepressible, and is an enormously popular and talented star. We are delighted that she is going to join the program as our moderator. This is going to be a great new chapter for The View."Goldberg will become a permanent fixture on The View on Sept. 4 when the show kicks off its 11th season. Goldberg is no stranger to the show, having appeared as...
