The lawsuit filed in July in which angry grrl Avril Lavigne was accused of appropriating too much of her hit single "Girlfriend" from the Rubinoos' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," has been settled. Previously, Avril claimed she had never heard of the Rubinoos' track, but her manager opted to avoid a costly legal battle and strike a deal, the terms of which have not been disclosed.

The first CD of Saturday Night Live performances in nearly 10 years will be sold exclusively at Target beginning Sunday, says Reuters. Live from SNL! features 11 tracks from the past four seasons, including tune croons by Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5 and the Foo Fighters. (What is "foo," by the way? Always wondered.) Addressing the controversy ignited by (as she puts it) "two guys who wrote for some band from the 1970s I have never in my life heard of," Avril Lavigne posted a statement on her website claiming no wrongdoing in her and cowriter Luke Gottwald's penning of "Girlfriend." Positing that the Rubinoos' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" "has no musical similarities" to her current hit, Lavigne deems herself falsely accused. "Luke and I have done nothing wrong," she says. "There is no merit to their claim."To make her case, Lavigne cites the Rolling Stones' "Get Off of My Cloud" and the Ramones' own "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" as also featuring similar themes. "[The Plaintiffs'] claim is based on five words! All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language." (Bob Dylan excluded.)

TV Guide's own Ken Fox called this one months ago. Songwriters Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer allege in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court that Avril Lavigne and the cowriters of her current hit, "Girlfriend," cribbed from their 1979 song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend," which was originally performed by new-wave band The Rubinoos. "We are not so naive as to chalk it up to some sort of cosmic coincidence," Dunbar says in a statement to the AP. "The lyric, the meter, the rhythm... they're identical." A spokesperson for Lavigne declined comment. A court date has been set for Aug. 28. In related news, this rather insane girl I broke up with back in college is suing Kelly Clarkson for stealing "Never Again" from the hourlong harangue she directed at me some 15 years ago.
