On Wednesday night, CW's top-rated series, America's Next Top Model, showed double-digit growth last season and was the No. 1 show in its time slot with women 18-34. Next season, America's Next Top Model will stay in its 8-9 pm berth, followed by the new drama Gossip Girl from 9-10 pm. From The O.C. producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, Gossip Girl is based on the best-selling young-adult book series of the same name. The show features an ensemble cast of new and veteran actors, including Blake Lively (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and Leighton Meester (Surface), and chronicles the struggle for social supremacy among teens in a posh Manhattan prep school. It's like that Friends episode, only... actually, I have no end to that sentence.... Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, employing motion-capture technology, will each direct one film in a trilogy based on the adventures of Tintin, says the AP.... Ashton Kutcher's MTV series will premiere its eighth and final season on April 10 — three days after the cabler "sneak peeks" all eight new episodes in a back-to-back marathon. This time around, Punk'd's prey include Hilary Swank, "Magic" Johnson, Nelly Furtado and Jewel. The series wraps up June 5 with a "Punk'd Awards" show — or so Ashton wants us to believe. Just watch, it'll be all test patterns.

Beauty and the Geek
When Beauty and the Geek first debuted on the WB (remember the WB?) in 2005, many assumed it would either be a bad dating show or a cruel prank. Happily, it was neither. Exec producers Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg managed to make it a sweet, good-natured "social experiment" in which two opposite groups helped each other become more well-rounded and understand each others' worlds. Any friendships and romances were just the surprising side effect. Well, something different must have been in the air when they were filming the third go-round (premiering tonight at 8 pm/ET, on the CW), because when we caught Goldberg between his myriad projects, he told TVGuide.com that this year's beauty-geek connections shocked even him.

Who would have thought that a show called Beauty and the Geek could be one of the nicest reality shows on television? This season began with seven guys and girls paired up with the goal of pushing everyone out of their comfort zones, all while shooting for a $250,000 payday. The winners of executive producer Ashton Kutcher's "social experiment" this time were Josh Herman, 27, and Cheryl Tenbush, 24 — a surprise in only that this nondating show resulted in a romance for Cher and fellow contestant Wes Wilson. Since Beauty and the Geek wrapped, Josh has sold a comedy screenplay to Fox and Cher has moved out to L.A. (But as our phone call will reveal, it seems she's not out there by her lonesome....)

Beauty and the Geek In the past, I guess I always fast-forwarded (thank you, DVR) through the opening credits, but I finally heard the lyrics of the show's theme song (the Pet Shop Boys' "Opportunity"): "I've got the brains; you've got the looks. Tom Bergeron was faster than the quickstep with his off-the-cuff humor tonight — calling the rowdy audience soccer fans, warning the judges not to tell Drew Lachey he wasn't "in sync," suggesting that Master P start a line of dancing shoes. I was also tickled by the way George Hamilton was orchestrating all these little soap-operatic scenes for the moments just before the commercial. I'm glad some people are taking the competitive edge off things.
Lisa and Louis: I always thought of the rhumba as Baby and Johnny's dance from Dirty Dancing. Even without the lift, this was much dirtier. But what, dear god, is up with choosing that
