Shark Weeks Makes a Ratings Splash for Discovery Channel

It's just like the sleazy mayor in Jaws says: "You yell, 'Barracuda,' everybody says, 'Huh? What?' You yell, 'Shark,' you've got a ratings smash in the middle of summer!" Discovery Channel's Sunday-night Shark Week special, Ocean of Fear: The Worst Shark Attack Ever, brought the cabler its best numbers ever for the annual feeding frenzy. The Richard Dreyfuss-narrated Shark Attack hooked 3.9 million total viewers, way more than 2003's Anatomy of a Shark Bite (which scared up 3.2 million). The 20th "Shark Week" runs through Saturday. In related news, Daryl Hannah, John Schneider and Armand Assante have signed on to star in Hallmark Channel's three-hour Shark Swarm, about... oh, come on. Read the title. read more

September 28, 2006: Graduation Day

As if Abby and Luka didnt have enough to contend with tonight manic-depressive Maggie breezed in to meet her ailing grandson and offer her support in a flurry of note taking and NICU staff badgering However she also brought an unexpected mix of motherly wisdom and perspective that Abby sorely needed Sally Field has done an excellent job with this role in each of her appearances taking a strident character and making her sympathetic and relatable never sugarcoating the challenges of living with mental illness Despite her doubts Maggie actually persuaded Abby to include the baby in a trial that was both risky and promising The scene where she insisted something was wrong with the baby reminded me of the scene from Terms of Endearment when Shirley MacLaine loses it on the nurses for not administering her daughters pain medication on time While I thought it was downright mean to lead all of us to believe the baby had died the last scene of Abby with her mom offe read more

ERHow nice to finally see the episode that was supposed to be on last Thursday. Was it worth the wait? Yes, and I'll, of course, tell you why. Laura Innes as Kerry Weaver has been one of my favorite actresses and characters ever since she began on this show. Kerry can indeed be a bitch, but we're often able to see her other layers, like tonight with those tender moments of true friendship between Kerry and Abby. But Kerry's appearances have been few and far between the last few seasons, so I was really gearing up for this episode. I was so glad she finally decided to go ahead with the hip-replacement surgery, especially after she said, "I'm a disabled person. What else would I have left?" What an effective way to end the hour by having her count down from 100 after receivi read more

I was reading about the ...

Question: I was reading about the partial face transplant that was just done in France, and I had a sudden flash to a movie I saw when I was a kid. It was about a woman who was disfigured in an accident and everyone said there was nothing they could do except this one surgeon. The thing I remember most was a shot of her mouth sewed shut — everyone says I'm imagining it, but I'm sure it was a movie.Answer: It probably says something about me that almost everything makes me think of some movie or other, but apparently I'm not the only one. The movie you're remembering (no, you didn't imagine it) is the 1984 TV movie Why Me?, based on the real experiences of Air Force nurse Leola Mae Harmon (played by Glynnis O'Connor) and Dr. James Stallings ( read more
