Was raised by a single father, the owner of a hair salon.
Nicknamed "Chunky" as a kid because he was the stockiest member of the roller-skating team.
In his early teens, he was a national champion and record holder in in-line skating, and a state champion in swimming.
Didn't compete in a 2003 World Cup event in South Korea after receiving death threats due to his controversial Olympic gold win at the 2002 games. He snagged the medal after a South Korean athlete was disqualified.
Wrote the 2002 autobiography A Journey.
Tied with speed skater Eric Heiden as the only U.S. male to win five medals in the Winter Olympic Games.
Paired with dancer Julianne Hough for the fourth edition of Dancing with the Stars.
