Exclusive: Anthony Geary, Jane Elliot, Kin Shriner Dish the Golden Days of General Hospital

Kin Shriner, Jane Elliot and Anthony Geary

Drinking! Deceit! Debauchery! And some of it even happened on screen. General Hospital was one wild and crazy place in the late '70s and early '80s under the command of the brilliant yet oh-so-lethal exec producer Gloria Monty. In honor of the ABC soap's 50th anniversary, TV Guide Magazine gathered three survivors of the era — good friends Tony Geary (Luke), Jane Elliot (Tracy) and Kin Shriner (Scotty) — for a raucous lunch near the GH studio. Shriner shows up at the restaurant in a bright cherry-red shirt, the exact same color as Geary's pants. "How weird is that?" says Shriner. "If we put your pants with my shirt it would look kind of clownish." Says Geary with a laugh: "I hate to tell ya, but we're both halfway there now." Elliot, for reasons to be revealed later, is wearing a large smock. Geary orders pasta. Shriner and Elliot get the fish tacos, with Elliot noting, "Kin, who has way too much time on his hands, called me yesterday to discuss in detail the fish tacos he was going to have here today." Soon enough the memories are flying. Who quit the show in a tiff over $50? Who got arrested on the way to work? Who had a steady stream of sexmates coming in and out of the dressing room? It's all here and lots more, so get ready for the full Monty!

General Hospital's Nostalgic 50th Anniversary Plans

Genie Francis, Anthony Geary, Kin Shriner

All that's missing are the mullets. A trip to the General Hospital soundstage these days feels like an express pass to the 1980s, especially during the filming of the big fan-fave event known as the Nurses Ball. The red-carpet soiree — airing April 5, 8 and 9 as part of the soap's 50th anniversary celebration — has Rick Springfield returning as Dr. Noah Drake, who will take to the stage and rock out "Jessie's Girl." Off on the sidelines, Frisco (Jack Wagner) is trying to woo back his Reagan-era love Felicia (Kristina Wagner), while Anna (Finola Hughes) is once again in the arms of her Duke (Ian Buchanan). And look, it's the long-lost Nurse B obbie (Jackie Zeman)! Fitness guru Richard Simmons, another '80s fixture in Port Charles, is on hand as the charity gala's pushy choreographer. But not even he can get these oldies sweatin'.

General Hospital's Kin Shriner on John Stamos, Genie Francis and the Pot-Smoking Eighties

Kin Shriner

It's hard to tell who's more excited about Kin Shriner's February 19 return to General Hospital — him or us! The most beloved third wheel in suds history, Shriner's Scotty Baldwin was married to Laura (Genie Francis) back when she famously fell in love with Luke (Anthony Geary). Will the poor guy finally get revenge? According to an ABC rep, "Scott Baldwin returns to Port Charles as most of the town is gathered at the Haunted Star for a Valentine's Day party and the first person he sees is Luke. Things will escalate very quickly between the two of them." TV Guide Magazine spoke with Shriner — a veteran of 12 serials — about the best job he ever had... read more

General Hospital's Anthony Geary: "We'd Been Living on Death Row"

Anthony Geary

When General Hospital's Anthony Geary won his record seventh Daytime Emmy Award last month, he was understandably emotional — not just over his win, but because of the soap's rise from near-death.

"We were so shaky about a year ago until Frank [Valentini] came on to shore us all up," Geary told reporters at ABC's Television Critics Association fall TV previews Thursday. "We'd been living on Death Row. I think we were all pretty thrilled and excited about being acknowledged for the hard work."

ABC at TCAs: All the latest news

General Hospital — ABC's last remaining soap on the air — won five awards out of a leading 23 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, an achievement the cast credits to new executive producer Valentini. Daytime Emmy Scoop and Fearless Predictions

Anthony Geary

Apparently, we had nothing to worry about. There was a collective sigh of relief in the daytime TV community last month when it was announced that the 39th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards would air Saturday, June 23 on cable channel HLN (8/7c). Up until then, it was widely believed the awards — which no network wanted — would go untelevised or end up on the Internet. But Malachy Wienges, chairman of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, tells TV Guide Magazine that he "always had two backup plans in place — including one with Reelz — if the HLN [deal] didn't happen. We would never have let these awards leave television."
