The end of Fringe is upon us.
In just over two weeks, the fifth and final season of Fringe will launch. Set in 2036, the story picks up after the Fringe Division has just been just freed from a 20-year slumber in amber — but someone is missing from this Bishop family reunion, as shown in the exclusive first look photo of the fifth season premiere, "Transilience Thought Unifier Model-11."

It looks like Walter Bishop is in major trouble when Fringe returns for its final season.
Fringe Season 5 Video: The Observers arrive on earth
The latest trailer for the Fox series begins where the last one ended, depicting Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia (Anna Torv) happily picnicking with their daughter Etta off to the side. That is until The Observers arrive. By the end of the 30-second spot, Walter (John Noble) is bloody and being told, "You are fighting a lot more than I would've thought possible."

They are coming.
The "they," of course, are the time-traveling Observers who have taken over the Earth in the final season of Fringe. The fifth season takes place in 2036, where the Observers have enslaved humanity, as teased in last season's 19th episode, in which an FBI agent named Etta (Georgina Haig) attempted to free the ambered Fringe Division so they could save the Earth. It turned out, Etta was actually the grown-up daughter of Peter (Joshua Jackson) and Olivia (Anna Torv)!
Fringe's final season will pay off big for longtime fans
In the new trailer for Season 5, we get a flashback to when the Observers first arrived on Earth, all while the Bishop family — which Olivia seems to finally be a part of (note the wedding rings) — attempts to enjoy a lovely day at the park. Considering that Peter ends up ambered and Olivia is MIA in 2036, this picnic won't end well. Check out the clip:
It's Fringe's last stand.
Just three days into shooting the fifth and final season, Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv, Lance Reddick and showrunner J.H. Wyman waxed poetic over the final season, which sees the series jump ahead to 2036, where the Observers have taken over the Earth and the only people able to save the world is the former Fringe Division team members we've grown to know and love over the last four seasons.
Fox at TCAs: All the latest news
The Fox sci-fi series will say farewell in a 13-episode love letter to the fans who have stuck with the series through the low ratings, the dual universes and even the move to the so-called "death slot" Fridays. Though Fringe is ending, Jackson says it's not bittersweet for him. "All shows end," he told reporters at Fox's Television Critics Association fall TV previews Monday. "I'd rather have...

As Fringe prepares to launch its fifth and final season, speculation runs wild on how the Fringe Division — or what's left of it in 2036 — will be able to save the world from the Observers, who run rampant in the future after enslaving humanity back in 2016.
"It's the worst position they've ever been in," executive producer J.H. Wyman tells TVGuide.com. "Just by the very nature of an Observer, they think much faster than you, they have abilities that you do not have. They just know more about everything, about time and space. They're going to have to really get it together to beat these guys."
