Despite what you may have read, not everybody hates Matt Lauer.

So says Today executive producer Don Nash, who recently sat in on a focus group of female morning-show viewers. When they were asked what would make them stop watching the NBC program, "every one of them said, 'If Matt Lauer were to leave,'" Nash says. "Their opinions didn't square with what we had been reading in the papers and on websites."

With Matt Lauer facing growing backlash over his role in Ann Curry's exit from the Today show, speculation has grown about whether NBC is looking for someone to replace him. A report Tuesday said CNN's Anderson Cooper had been approached about the morning show gig.

The behind-the-scenes drama at the Today show surrounding Ann Curry's departure is the story that keeps on giving. Now, a new report in New York magazine claims Matt Lauer nearly moved to ABC last year, amid a leak that Ryan Seacrest had been approached to replace him on Today.
