Liam McIntyre was working on the set of Spartacus the day that he learned that his predecessor Andy Whitfield had succumbed to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma last fall. Whitfield first filled the title role of Starz's bloody gladiator drama.

Starz Orders Another Season of Spartacus

Spartacus will be back for a third season, Starz announced Monday.

"There is no denying the impact Spartacus has had in the marketplace with fans across the globe thirsting for the continuation of the epic tale," said Carmi Zlotnick, an executive with the premium cable outlet.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield has died. He was 39.

Whitfield died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Sydney on Sunday, his manager, Sam Maydew, told The Associated Press. In a statement, Whitfield's wife, Vashti, called her husband a "beautiful young warrior" who died in the "arms of his loving wife," according to the AP.

Whitfield, a Welsh actor who lived in Australia, was virtually unknown to American audiences when he was cast in the lead of the graphically violent and sexual Starz series.... read more

Besides lots of bloodshed, Manu Bennett says there are no guarantees when it comes to Friday's Spartacus: Gods of the Arena finale (Starz, 10/9c).

"Nothing means anything," he tells TVGuide.com. "Episode 6 has a big turn of events that creates the unexpected. That's kind of the nature of our show. It's not always happy or what everybody wants or expects, but there's a lot in store that will change the dynamics again."

Andy Whitfield isn't the only Spartacus: Blood and Sand actor to be replaced for the second season. Lesley-Ann Brandt is also leaving the Starz series, and her role will be recast, Deadline reports.

In the prequel Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, Brandt played body slave Naevia to Lucretia (Lucy Lawless), who eventually becomes the lover of Crixus the gladiator in the original series' first season. Brandt reportedly decided not to renew her contract to appear in the second season. She just began a recurring role on CSI: NY and recently appeared on an episode of Chuck.
