Set in 1978, Gracie is an inspirational film about a teenage girl who overcomes the loss of her brother and fights the odds to achieve her dream of playing competitive soccer at a time when girls' soccer did not exist. Based on true events from the lives of the Shue family (producer and co-star Andrew Shue, Academy Award-nominated actress Elisabeth Shue), the film is directed by Academy Award-winning director Davis Guggenheim, who happens to be part of the family as well, being married to Elisabeth Shue. The film also features a terrific 1970's soundtrack including classic songs from Boston, Blondie, Aretha Franklin, and the Boss, Bruce Springsteen. Living in South Orange New Jersey, 15 year old Gracie Bowen (Carly Schroeder) is the only girl in a family of three brothers. Their family life revolves almost entirely around soccer: her father (Dermot Mulroney) and brothers are obsessed with the sport, practicing in the backyard's makeshift field every day from morning 'til night. Inspired by the real-life events that followed the untimely 1988 death of William Shue (brother of cast members Elisabeth and Andrew Shue and executive producer John Shue) the feel-good sports drama Gracie unfolds in 1978 New Jersey. 15-year-old Gracie Bowen (newcomer Carly Schroeder) is still reeling from the passing of her brother Johnny (Jesse Lee Soffer), a star player on the high-school soccer team. When Gracie defies nearly everyone's wishes by vowing to replace Johnny under the aegis of cantankerous Coach Colasanti (John Doman), it irritates her parents (Elisabeth Shue, Dermot Mulroney) -- who encourage her to stick to activities better-suited to her gender -- and her best friend, Jena (Julia Garro), who warns her that athletic women are often considered "lesbos." The young woman persists, however, and wins the hearts of her most strident detractors, surmounting one obstacle after another and racing toward certain victory. Melrose Place Didn't Ask for Your Input, Andrew Shue

Dear Andrew Shue:

According to the New York Daily News, you don't think the CW's Melrose Place remake is a good idea. You're probably right!

That said, since I've already decided it's the most important piece of television ever, I'm feeling kind of protective of it. So back off!

You've kept busy in your post-Melrose years doing some nice work for kids and moms. Stick to that. No more of this: "Melrose Place was a great show in its time, and if I were calling the shots, I would say don't bring it back," Shue said. "Leave it as it was at its time. That's the way it should be." Yes, Billy Campbell, we wouldn't want to tarnish the memory of your tour de force acting in scenes like this one. Shakespeare in the Park it was not.

Shut yer pie hole.

Regards,

Mickey O'Connor
