Last Resort follows a renegade crew of a nuclear submarine, led by Men of a Certain Age's Andre Braugher, who goes on the run after defying an order to fire nuclear missiles. They find sanctuary at a NATO base, where they declare themselves the world's smallest nuclear nation.

Before executive producer Greg Berlanti came in to pitch what would become Political Animals, USA Network wasn't actively looking for a series set in Washington, D.C. "We were probably as averse to [D.C. shows] as any network," says Bill McGoldrick, USA's executive vice president of original scripted programming.

The network fall lineups are starting to take shape. As execs lick their wounds, dust off their failures and prepare to try it again with a whole new crop of shows, this is the time of year when they tell themselves — and more importantly, try to convince advertisers — that next season will be different.
And sometimes it is. Witness ABC's 2004 turn-around year, when Lost and Desperate Housewives hit the air, or the 1994 season, when NBC was blessed with ER and Friends. But those game-changing years don't come along often. As we head into the mid-May network "upfront" presentations (when new series are unveiled to media buyers and bubble shows are fed their fates), here's a network-by-network guide on what to look out for.
Law & Order: SVU
Warren Leight joined Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as its showrunner just before star Christopher Meloni jumped ship. It was a particularly dismal time for NBC. Nobody would blame Leight if he wanted out of the long-running procedural after just one season. But it seems the opposite is true.
"I don't want it to be a victory lap," Leight tells TVGuide.com of a possible Season 14. "I want it to be 14 years down, seven to go, as opposed to 14 years down and it's been a good run."
The current season of SVU hasn't been its strongest, but it has perhaps been its most interesting. After the exits of Meloni and longtime showrunner Neal Baer, ratings have dropped (6.9 million/1.9 average versus last season's 8.8 million/2.7) and with little help from its lead-in, the struggling Rock Center with Brian Williams. But ratings don't tell the whole story.
"I get so tired of people saying that the show is down from Meloni," Leight says...
As sad as Mariska Hargitay is that Christopher Meloni has left Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, she says that with Meloni's Detective Stabler out of the picture, it's now finally time for her character, Detective Olivia Benson, to open herself up to love. All that will-they-or-won't-they was holding Benson back, Hargitay says.
"Chris and I started together and...

Will Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) ever get her happy ending?
On Wednesday's episode of Law & Order: SVU, the veteran detective weathered not one but two storms when she learned she had elicited a false confession of rape and put away an innocent man for eight years — a fact which subsequently put a harsh spotlight on her romantic relationship with...
Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) is about to get a blast from the past — as in, it's coming back to haunt her.
On Wednesday's episode of Law & Order: SVU (10/9c on NBC), Bayard Ellis (Andre Braugher) returns when a man Olivia put away eight years ago for rape argues that he was never guilty, an argument buoyed by a recent copycat crime. In this exclusive clip, Olivia is convinced that...
