Spoiler alert! If you haven't watched last night's Private Practice, stop reading now, as this story addresses the death of a major character.
It was no secret that Tim Daly was leaving ABC's Private Practice. Over the summer, the disgruntled actor expressed his obvious disappointment about his dismissal through tweets to his followers. Still, some fans were holding out hope that creator Shonda Rhimes might send his character, Dr. Pete Wilder, off into the sunset just as she did when Audra McDonald (Naomi) elected to return to Broadway at the end of the 2010-2011 season. Instead, Rhimes chose the same fate she crafted for Chris Lowell's Dell in 2010. Here's why....
[Warning: This story contains major spoilers from the season premiere of Private Practice. Read at your own risk!]
Private Practice wasted no time in doing episodes that were outside the box, as executive producer Shonda Rhimes promised.
In its season premiere, Private went full Rashomon-style, telling the same story from different perspectives, culminating in several big reveals for the doctors of Seaside Wellness. Since the ABC medical drama split the premiere by character, so will we! Find out what happened to Addison & Co, including who she chose, what happened to Pete and the big twist involving Charlotte. Plus: The cast dishes on what's next!
Get ready to say farewell to Pete Wilder.
When Private Practice returns, Pete will finally be on trial for the mercy killing of one of his patients — but considering Tim Daly won't actually be returning for the sixth season of the ABC medical drama, there are a few options for how Pete will say his farewell.

So what's the deal with Kurt this season on Glee? When is he going to New York? — Amy
NATALIE: Not right away. Kurt will still be hanging out at McKinley High in the season premiere, but it sounds like producers won't waste any time getting him to the Big Apple and... on his way to a career in fashion? In the third episode of the season, he'll meet an eccentric editor at Vogue (not his new boss) who'll recognize his (other) potential.
Will Castle and Beckett being together change the kinds of cases Castle features? — Melanie
ADAM: Not really, but...
While Grey's Anatomy's 2011 musical episode was met with mixed reactions by both critics and the show's stars, I loved it. That's why I'm excited that a year and a half after telling me she'd like to try the same concept on Private Practice, exec producer Shonda Rhimes finally seems ready to pull the trigger.
With Kate Walsh exiting after 13 episodes, "the writers and I have approached this season as a no-holds-barred, all-bets-off season," Rhimes says. "Every episode will be special. Some of it's going to be hilarious and some of it's going to be heartbreaking." Asked if some episodes might feature a fantasy element, Rhimes turns cagey: "Hmmm...that's interesting. Possibly."
Sad news for Private Practice fans: Tim Daly will not return for the sixth season of the ABC medical drama, TVGuide.com has confirmed.
Daly's Pete Wilder was last seen being released on bail after the mercy killing of one of his patients. It was especially bad timing considering Violet (Amy Brenneman) had finally decided that she still wanted to fight for her troubled relationship with Pete. Since Daly won't be returning, we can only assume Pete's headed to the slammer for good. There's no word yet on whether Daly — an original cast member since the backdoor pilot aired during Grey's Anatomy in 2007 — will return for any episodes to wrap up his story line.
Amy Brenneman and Tim Daly, Private Practice
Pete's in troooouble!
The Private Practice doc decided to do what was morally but not legally right when he let a patient die of his own volition instead of being stuck on a ventilator like the patient's father wanted. Instead, Pete (Tim Daly) listened to the patient's partner and pulled the plug.
Could Private Practice earn a 13-episode final season?
"It seems like at the end of every season...
Amy Brenneman, Tim Daly
After Pete (Tim Daly) walked out on his therapy session on last week's Private Practice, it seemed like all hope might be lost for him and Violet (Amy Brenneman). However, things will look more positive on Tuesday's episode when Pete decides to take a more carefree approach to fix their marriage.
"It's exciting! I've always wanted to see the doctors dance!" Paul Adelstein joked from the set of Private Practice shortly after learning that the series has been moved to Tuesdays following Dancing with the Stars.
In its fifth season, the ABC medical drama is moving from its long-time home on Thursdays following flagship series Grey's Anatomy to Tuesday nights at 10/9c. In its place, the network debuted new series Scandal from creator Shonda Rhimes, the woman also behind Grey's and Private.
Mega Buzz: How will Charlotte and Cooper handle being parents?
TVGuide.com hit the set in January shortly after the announcement of the move was made, and the cast was hyped for the new challenge. "I think it's...

When Private Practice returns (Thursday, 10/9c on ABC), Pete is hanging on for dear life after a heart attack, Amelia is hitting the sauce, Addison and Sam have reunited even though they disagree on the children issue, and her mystery man from the finale? He's a fertility doctor! Also, Oceanside Wellness is no more. Get ready to welcome Seaside Wellness Center to the mix. That being said, before diving in to Season 5, you might need a quick refresher on where we left off — and a juicy tease about what comes next.

Where Were We? After a rocky season with Sam, the pair eventually broke up. Addison then went out with a stranger from the supermarket, with whom she shared a kiss and was enticed by his offer to run away to Fiji. Ultimately, she stood him up at the airport and went back to Sam, still intent on having a child, even though he doesn't.
