Weekend TV Playlist: The Killing, Richard Pryor, Orphan Finale

In the killing fields of the ubiquitous TV crime drama, there are shows that attempt to expand the formula with depth of character and a hauntingly fatalistic tone, while many others cling to the comfort zone of wrapping each case within a tidy hour, just another routine day on the job. AMC's The Killing, back for a third season of dark brooding after narrowly escaping cancellation, is ambitious to a fault. And its fault lines showed throughout the first two erratic and indulgent though often absorbing seasons, with an overextended inquiry into a single murder case that frustrated and annoyed viewers with its obvious red herrings and stubborn lack of resolution until long past interest had waned.

Chef Spike Mendelsohn may have competed on Bravo's culinary reality show Top Chef -- twice -- but he still didn't expect to be recruited for Food Network's Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs, which premieres Sunday at 9/8c.

"I got the phone call out of nowhere. I was actually quite surprised," Mendelsohn tells "I didn't expect them to cast me as part of this crew, alongside the other ones. I was definitely honored to have the opportunity. There are a lot of chefs involved that I look up to and I follow their careers. To be standing next to them, was kind of like, 'OK, you made it.'"

Food TV's Good Eats Guy Hits the Road

If you find Food Network's Alton Brown to be a fascinating fountain of information as the host of Good Eats, you won't want to miss what he's serving next. The four-part series Feasting on Asphalt (premiering Saturday, July 29 at 9 pm/ET) seats Brown and his buds on motorcycles as they travel cross-country for what has to be the most impressive progressive dinner on record, sampling regional cuisine all along their way from Savannah, Georgia, to the California coast. Brown paid a visit to recount his travels. As a guy who has a peanut-butter sandwich in the fridge down the hall on this particular day, I feel a tad inadequate interviewing you.
