Attended the Australian Film Television and Radio School in Sydney with director Jane Campion (The Piano) and worked on two of her early shorts.
Before breaking into movies, he helmed music videos for Fleetwood Mac, INXS and Sting and made commercials for Nissan, Coca-Cola and Swatch.
Directed his first feature in 1989, the post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Clouds.
Was nominated for Best Director at the 1994 Saturn Awards for The Crow, which grossed nearly $95 million worldwide. The film's star, Brandon Lee, was accidentally shot and killed during the shoot.
