Alec Baldwin has a Golden Globe to show for his 30 Rock run, but what he one day might want to earn is your vote, should he seek political office. Ever wondered what a Fox reality show would look like on NBC? Watch, and revel in, the glimpses we’re shown of the fictional (at least for now) reality spoof "MILF Island" in tonight’s first episode back of 30 Rock. Everyone from Alec Baldwin’s deliciously malicious network boss Jack Donaghy to a certain other vice president who should have better things to do are glued to the season finale of "Island," which is what Survivor would look like if populated by cougar moms and adolescent boys. It’s a hilarious backdrop to an episode that, as is often the case, is at its best when Jack and beleaguered Liz Lemon (the terrific Tina Fey) tangle and tango over the sad state of the business we call show. No, it’s not guest star Carrie Fisher, nor is it Kenneth’s basement ‘page-off’ (though both are fabulous storylines). What made us laugh the most was Alec Baldwin’s sheer comedic genius in the scene where he brings Tracy to a therapist and ends up role-playing not only as Tracy’s dad and mom but even as “da white dude his moms left his dad fo’.” Absolutely brilliant! Last summer, fans of the movies based on Tom Clancy's popular books were thrilled to hear that Paramount Home Entertainment was announcing new cinema-quality high definition releases of all four films in The Jack Ryan Collection. These Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD sets would include Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin in The Hunt for Red October, Harrison Ford in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, and Ben Affleck with Morgan Freeman in The Sum of All Fears. The releases were all to be the "Special Collector's Edition" versions, incorporating all the bonus material found on the similarly titled DVDs... but with 1080p quality video!People, myself included, were excited, and this was certainly high on most want lists. The release date for versions in both formats was going to be Sept. 25th. But then, in August, Paramount announced that they would no longer support the Blu-ray format, and that effective immediately all future hi-def releases would be HD DVD only. I suppose I could dwell on the fact that a major Hollywood guild has once again ignored the very existence of TV's finest acting ensemble, Friday Night Lights — in favor of the mugging and posturing on Boston Legal. As they'd say on another SAG favorite, Grey's Anatomy: Seriously? Is it wrong to want to form our own picket line?Also: What's up with snubbing Pushing Daisies and its fantastical cast?And yet the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, announced Thursday morning, did shower love on my favorite new show of 2007, AMC's Mad Men, and its terrific star, Jon Hamm (who has just joined the cast of the remake of the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, which sounds appropriately robotic). If the barometer of an interesting TV awards show is the number of fresh faces invited to the party, then the Golden Globe nominations (announced Thursday morning) passes the test. Not with a perfect score, mind you. Any institution that so completely ignores NBC's wonderful Friday Night Lights deserves some spirited jeering.And the Globes' addiction to sexy sizzle and hype can lead to some puzzling choices: Big Love, fun as it is, over The Sopranos' final season? Bill Paxton over James Gandolfini? (And if the Globes is going to shower love on Big Love, how could the women who play Bill's wives go unheralded, especially Ginnifer Goodwin?) Californication over Weeds?But let's look at the bright side. The Hollywood Foreign Press clearly spent some time checking out the TV landscape during last summer's remarkable season of cable breakthroughs. Among the political embarrassments, you'll find Paris Hilton at No. 2 (wailing for her mother as she's hauled off to prison); Alec Baldwin at No. 3 ( for calling his daughter a thoughtless pig); David Hasselhoff at No. 4 (soused in the shower); Britney at No. 6 (for her Night of the Living Dead routine at the VMAs); Rosie O'Donnell vs. Elisabeth Hasselbeck at No. 7; Fox at No. 8 for setting free speech back decades by censoring Sally Field at the Emmys; and of course, Miss Teen South Carolina at No. 9, working up a sweat discussing the Iraq and such.
