  • Both his father and his grandfather were successful bookies.
  • Twice failed his finals at Salford Grammar School, prompting the headmaster to suggest he apply to RADA.
  • Attended RADA with Alan Bates, Peter O'Toole and Brian Bedford.
  • Chosen to play the title role in Lawrence of Arabia but turned it down because it would mean signing a long-term contract; recommended O'Toole for the role, and went on to star in Tom Jones instead.
