At Monday's Sports Emmys, HBO led all networks, taking eight trophies. Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel was honored along with its Ghosts of Flatbush documentary and the network's boxing coverage.ESPN scored seven total Emmys (including three for ESPN.com) and Fox picked up five Emmys. CBS and NBC won three statues apiece.It was a big night for NBC's football coverage. Sunday Night Football's Al Michaels won best play-by-play honors and his boothmate John Madden took top analyst honors. Football Night in America co-host Cris Collinsworth was named best studio analyst. James Brown won best studio host for CBS' The NFL Today.Other Emmys went to Fox's Fiesta Bowl coverage along with NASCAR on Fox. ESPN's College GameDay won best weekly studio show, and TNT's Inside the NBA snared the Emmy for best daily studio show. —J.R. Whalen

Heiden's Fantastic Five — Lake Placid 1980In the speed-skating equivalent of running — and winning — a sprint, a mile, a marathon and nearly everything in between, Eric Heiden achieved what fellow Olympian Dan Jansen calls "the single greatest feat in the history of sports." Hard to disagree. Looking more superhero than mere mortal in his skin-tight uniform, the thunder-thighed skating machine collected five individual gold medals, setting four Olympic records and smashing a world record in his last event, the grueling 10,000-meter race, by more than six seconds. His incredible accomplishment has never been duplicated.

Super Bowl XLIn the interest of full disclosure, I must confess up front that I'm a huge Seahawks fan. This isn't an easy experience as a) They have historically sucked and b) I live in Philly, roughly 3,000 miles from the next nearest Seahawks fan. So, without bias or prejudice, I now offer my take on the mockery of a travesty of a sham that history will record as Super Bowl XL
After two weeks of hype, hours of pregame discussion and a visit to the animatronic Hall of Past Super Bowl MVPs (is it odd that Bart Starr looks younger than Mick Jagger?), it was time to start the game. The coin toss was a success on two fronts: The Seahawks won and Matt Hasselbeck didn't guarantee a victory.
