  • Drafted in 1984 by the New York Yankees.
  • Spent time in the Yankees farm system, as well as on the Yankee roster, with his older brother Mark.
  • Was part of two firsts in World Series history: won the championship with the 1993 Toronto Blue Jays in the first one clinched on Canadian soil; won with the 1997 Florida Marlins in the franchise's first WS win.
  • During the 1994 MLB strike, lobbied Congress for the repeal of baseball's anti-trust exemption.
  • Won the 1999 Branch Rickey Award for community service.
  • Won the 2000 Roberto Clemente Award for combined on- and off-the-field contributions.
  • Started Game 1 and Game 5 for the Mets against Andy Pettitte in the Yankees' 4-1 World Series win in 2000.
  • On April 30, 2002, earned a 10-1 win for the Mets over the Arizona Diamondbacks, becoming the first ever to beat all 30 teams.
  • Retired as a Yankee on March 16, 2006.
  • Has covered baseball for YES, ESPN, Fox and MLB Network.
