Aspired to be a painter before turning to filmmaking.
Made his directorial debut in 1943 with the martial-arts drama Sugata Sanshiro (Judo Saga).
Received an Honorary Foreign Language Film Award Oscar in 1951 for the classic Rashomon.
Released the memoir Something Like an Autobiography in 1982.
Won Best Director from the National Board of Review for his 1985 comeback film, Ran, which was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film.
Was the inspiration for the Akira Kurosawa School of Film at Anaheim University, which opened in 2009.
Has had film festivals with awards named in his honor since his death, including the San Francisco International Film Festival and the Tokyo International Film Festival.
